B&N NOOK Video Brings Streaming Movies and TV Shows to iPad

Barnes & Noble(B&N) today made its NOOK Video service available on more than just its own NOOK Tablet and NOOK Color devices. Now Apple iPad, iPhones, and Android phones or tablets will be able to stream movies and TV shows from its app.

Starting today, users can download Nook Video for iPad, iPhone and any device running Google’s Android operating system. The application is free of charge, and acts as a digital gateway to the Nook video store that’s already been available exclusively on the B&N’s tablets for some time.

Users will be able to watch all of the television shows and movies that they’ve already purchased through the store, they can also purchase new content and the application will stream it in high-definition instantly. If you use the UltraViolet streaming service and have connected it to your Nook account, you can watch your UltraViolet movies through the app as well.

Features highlight

  • Thousands of movies and TV shows available—ad free—to stream or download.
  • Stream over Wi-Fi or your 3G/4G network.
  • Get the hottest Hollywood releases the same day they’re released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc™ and in some cases even earlier!
  • Rent or buy movies and TV shows in standard or high definition.
  • Take advantage of our NOOK Video apps for other platforms – and sync your videos across multiple devices.
  • Access your UltraViolet™ Collection of movies and TV shows to stream instantly, or download for offline viewing.
  • Start streaming your content on one device and pick up where you left off on your NOOK HD, HD+ and other NOOK Video apps.

You cannot buy or rent videos directly from the app, as that would count as an in-app purchase. B&N’s Nook ebook reading software is similarly devoid of in-app purchases. Once you sync your video library to the app, however, you can can stream or download both owned and rented movies and shows, either over Wi-Fi or a cellular connection. When connected to the Internet, your playback position is saved, enabling you to continue watching a video anywhere. Nook Video does not support AirPlay, so if you want to watch your videos through the app on a TV, you’ll need to use an HDMI cable.

NOOK Video includes content from HBO, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, STARZ, Viacom, Warner Bros. Entertainment, and Disney, among other studios and networks. It streams in SD or HD, but HD video may not be available on all devices.
