The live stream feature will arrive in an additional 13 Hearst-owned stations over the rest of the year. ABC is working to bring the feature to users in other markets, but that will depend on the willingness of more than 200 local broadcasters to join in on the live streaming.

Viewers will need to establish eligibility by verifying that they have an eligible pay-TV account with a local cable or satellite television company, and that they are within the local viewing area.

ABC may be expanding viewership on its iOS app, but it will be stepping back the availability of its shows through Hulu and ABC.com, limiting access to paying cable and satellite subscribers.

Transmitting television via live stream requires new deals with traditional distributors, like Comcast, DirecTV and Verizon FiOS, and with the owners of ABC’s affiliates. Gaining Hearst’s backing ahead of Tuesday’s upfront was important to ABC because it lent some local support to the app effort.

That ABC now has the technology to stream live television over mobile devices shows that the company is thinking about how its viewers’ habits are changing. YouTube will now let a few dozen of popular channels charge viewers a subscription fee of 99 cents or more per month, the company announced in a blog post. Each of these channels will offer two weeks of free viewing before charges kick in and some will provide discounts for those who sign up for an annual subscription. There are currently 53 paid channels participating in the pilot, including National Geographic Kids, UFC Select, and British TV provider Acorn TV.

Paying for content on YouTube may seem a little crazy, but the service has expanded far beyond grumpy cat and crying baby videos. Already there is a lot of premium content on YouTube, and the paid channel partners will have to deliver premium content to succeed. But, since we already pay for content in so many other places, YouTube is no different so long as the quality is there. And if a guaranteed pay day means we get better videos, it’s a positive move.

Once you purchase a subscription to a paid channel, you’ll be able to watch the videos on your computer, phone, tablet, and TV. Furthering the social theme of the service is the ability to check out what your friends are watching at a given moment and jump into the program with them.

A service is only as strong as its content, but Vdio features most of the latest releases from the big screen to network television. Current titles range from movies such as Zero Dark Thirty to The Hobbit and Skyfall, while popular television programs such as Breaking Bad, Homeland and Downton Abbey make up the broadcast front. TV shows are available to stream the day after they air, and subscribing to a whole season provides a discounted price. The service doesn’t have a deal worked out with HBO, meaning you’ll have to look elsewhere to catch up on Game of Thrones.

Within Vdio, you can watch a movie or TV show based on a rental or purchase basis and, since you’re already a premium Rdio user at this point, you use your Rdio account’s credit card to pay for them. This is another enormous benefit of Vdio, as the barrier to purchasing entry is much lower than a service without any payment path up front. The pricing seems roughly equivalent to other services like iTunes at around $14.99 for purchase and $15-$50 for a season of TV (which is perhaps a bit cheaper).

You can like a movie or add it to lists (which Vdio calls Sets) including favorites, ‘watch later’ or a custom one. If you create a custom list, you’re able to make it collaborative, meaning that other users can contribute to it. You’re able to limit that by just users you follow or open it up to everyone to add to. Once again, these kinds of features are really what Vdio has to offer in comparison to other services like iTunes, which has struggled with social components (see the failed Ping) over the past couple of years. The content is fairly well represented across most of the major movie studios and TV networks.

Vdio is trying to differentiate itself from other video services by focusing on the discoverability of content. They have Sets, playlists for TV shows and movies so you can share these with others and discover content via social interactions. Vdio (Free, iPad) is a brand new way to watch movies, and TV shows while connecting with others, and it’s just getting started. Also, Vdio is only available to Rdio Unlimited subscribers at first launch, but those that are unlimited subscribers get a $25 Vdio credit, and a wider roll out is coming soon.

For example, if you have a cable subscription, you could potentially watch “Good Morning America” in Starbucks while sipping on a latte.

ABC currently has an app that offers up full length television shows for free, but it is riddled with commercials and the available shows are limited. A streaming app, based on a cable subscription, would be able to offer ABC’s full catalogue of content to subscribers.

Over the years, ABC has been ahead of other networks in regards to offering digital versions of programming. ABC was the first network to make digital copies of television shows available on Apple’s iTunes and launched an application at the launch of the iPad that allows viewers to watch episodes, free of charge, that were supported by advertising.

ABC has declined to comment on the new app, and there’s no word on exactly when the app will arrive in the App Store, but the Times believes that it may become available to some cable and satellite subscribers later in 2013.
