iPad 2 Specs: What You Need to Know

Unless you’ve been living under a particularly heavy rock, you’re aware that Apple unveiled its iPad 2 on March 2. We’ll have lots of coverage of the device, but here’s a quick look at the announced iPad 2 specs.

iPad 2 specs: Display (9.7 inch IPS)

It’s particularly interesting that Apple is going with IPS (in-plane switching) technology. These are usually found in higher-end desktop monitors because they provide better color reproduction and wider viewing angles. Nearly all notebooks use TN (twisted nematic) panels, which are generally considered inferior. Resolution is 1024×768 – not quite as wide as 720p video (1280 pixels) but a little taller (720 pixels).

iPad 2 Specs:Size and Weight (9.50 by 7.31 by 0.34 inches, and 1.33 to 1.34 pounds)

The new iPad 2 is one-third thinner than the first-generation model, just 8.8mm thick, even thinner than the iPhone 4. At just 1.3 pounds, it is lighter than the previous 1.5 pound iPad.

iPad 2 Specs: Processor (1GHz dual-core Apple A5 chip)

Internally you now have a new dual core processor – Apple’s own A5 processor makes an appearance and we’ll bet our cotton socks this finds its way into iPhone 5 later this year. A new processor means the iPad should handle applications better, be faster, but critically Apple have said that the emphasis here is on graphics.

iPad 2 Specs: Storage (16, 32, or 64GB flash)

This is sort of a no-brainer. 128GB might be nice in a device this size, but it’s probably cost-prohibitive.
