After struggling to meet consumer demand for the iPad since it launched in April, estimated shipping times for new online orders have improved to within 24 hours, suggesting any production problems have been resolved.
New orders for the Wi-Fi-only and 3G-capable iPad, in all available storage capacities, now ship within 24 hours when purchased from Apple’s official online store.
For months, customers had to wait an estimated 7 to 10 days for their order to ship. A few weeks ago, iPad shipping times quietly improved to between 3 and 5 days.

Apple announced on Monday morning that it sold more than 300,000 iPads in the U.S. on the first day of sales, including “deliveries of pre-ordered iPads to customers, deliveries to channel partners and sales at Apple Retail Stores.”
Furthermore, iPad users downloaded more than one million apps from the App Store and 250,000 e-books from the iBookstore on the first day.

The iPad pre-orders are still on track to beat the iPhone’s initial launch numbers. With advance orders believed to have hit 190,000 last week, the rate of purchases has slowed down but should still have reached 240,000 of the tablets as of Friday. The current average of about 7,000 pre-orders per day would have the iPad beat the 2007 iPhone’s 270,000 launch weekend units by Monday based purely on online sales.

The Apple iPad went on pre-sale on 12 March, and within six hours it had sold over 91,000 iPads, according to an analyst. It was estimated that each hour approximately 25,000 units were being sold. Most of the sales were of the WiFi only version, with fewer sales of the WiFi and 3G versions.

As promised, iPad pre-orders have begun at the Apple Store. The campaign lets US customers pre-order the Wi-Fi and 3G versions of the tablet for online shipments. It also lets customers reserve a unit at a retail store in the country.
The pre-orders also include most of Apple’s official iPad accessories, including the Keyboard Dock ($69), Case ($39), regular Dock ($29), 10W USB Power Adapter ($29) and VGA Adapter ($29). The camera and SD card adapters, however, appear to be absent.

Apple’s iPad, which was unveiled at the end of January, will be available in US retail on Saturday April 3, the company announced today; and pre-orders will begin on March 12.

Given the years of speculation and hype that led up to its announcement, it’s not at all surprising that there is significant pent-up demand for Apple’s iPad. But that it exceeds demand estimates for the original iPhone, as a new survey from RBC/ChangeWave suggests, is a bit unexpected. The iPad is, after all, an entirely new device category between the laptop computer and the smartphone.
