This Week’s iPad 2 Rumor Roundup

The iPad 2 comes after the extremely successful run of the first iPad. Now for those Apple fans out there who are pacing in anticipation of the launch of the iPad2, stand by, here are some newest rumors you’re interested in:

Rumor 1. iPad 2 to Launch in February with Dual Cameras and Higher Resoution Display

According to Reuters, the device will feature front and back cameras, as well as a new, higher resolution display:

I have it on good authority that Apple will be announcing the iPad 2 in the next “3-4 weeks”, possibly Tuesday February 1st. The iPad 2 will feature a retina display and front/back cameras. If you’re thinking of buying an iPad, hold off for now. […] UPDATE: Spoke w/another source, the display has a “higher dpi”, but not technically a retina display. This seems odd to me, we’ll have to wait and see..

Given all the mockups and rumors we’ve seen/heard so far, the presence of dual cameras on the next-gen iPad is almost a certainty, especially given how Apple is pushing its FaceTime video chat service.

As for the display, while we don’t think Apple will double the resolution of the first generation iPad, the iPad 2 will likely feature a higher – though unspecified – resolution display. The current iPad features a 1024×768 pixels resolution, and we wouldn’t be surprised if the iPad 2 would come with a 1280×960, 1600×1200 or even higher resolution display.

While Reuters’s predictions have often been hit or miss, and should be taken with a grain of salt, we tend to be in line with his views, as the iPad 2 has already entered production, and Apple is likely eager to move fast to fend off the slew of Android Honeycomb tablets recently announced at CES.

Rumor 2. iPad 2 May Get 128GB of Storage Capacity

According to attendees blogging about the show, two mock-ups of the iPad 2 have shown up on the floor. One mock-up came from a company that sells docking stations; the other is from a speaker manufacturer. Each displayed new products with the mockups, both of which had iPad 2 and 128GB logos on the back.

If mockups on the floor of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this week are to be trusted, then the second iteration of Apple’s iPad tablet will have 128GB of capacity on its solid-state drive (SSD).

With 128GB of space, the iPad 2 could become a more viable contender against traditional laptops, including the $999 MacBook and MacBook Air, which come with a 250GB, 5400-rpm hard disk drive and 64GB SSD, respectively.

Rumor 3. iPad 2 Arriving With a USB Port

Rumors surrounding Apple’s next-generation iPad continue, with the newest ones suggesting the device, which has yet to even be announced, will arrive with a USB port.

“Talked with a colleague while working with some ODM [original design manufacturer] vendors connected with Apple,” Eldar Murtazin, editor-in-chief of the Mobile Review blog, wrote in a Dec. 28 Tweet reprinted on Apple Insider. “He is a research guy. From what he’s reporting, the iPad 2 will have a USB port.

Economic Daily News, a Chinese economic and business publication, also believes that the next iPad will have a USB port.   This addition adds to other speculation that the iPad 2 will have one, if not two, cameras, a better screen, as well as being lighter than the current version.
