YouTube App for iPad Now Offers Smart TV Streaming

The newest version of YouTube for iPhone and iPad now allows it to pair with smart TVs for easy couch video surfing. YouTube says it’s just another way they’re working to make it “super easy to watch YouTube on any screen.” The update is available now.

It’s a neat enough feature — Send to TV lets users pair iDevices with televisions that support Google TV, allowing YouTube content to be streamed directly to the television. The functionality of Send to TV is similar to Apple’s AirPlay, without the need for an Apple TV.

With the new feature, YouTube users on the same Wi-Fi network can control video playback on the TV and create playlists using the app. Send to TV also functions with both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, though use with consoles requires manual pairing with the iOS app.

To use the new feature, users just have to tap the small TV icon next to the search icon at the top of the app. The icon turns blue when the video starts playing on the TV.

The new devices will also let users beam HD videos and channels to their big screen. Until now, only smartphones and tablets were seen as secondary screens. But with this new concept, it turns out that televisions have now joined the league as well.

The universal YouTube app for iPad and iPhone can be downloaded from the App Store for free.
