What’s new in iMazing 3?

iMazing 3 comes with a revamped user interface that’s both intuitive and visually appealing. The updated interface makes managing your devices more accessible, even for beginners.

Additionally, iMazing 3 includes a “Device Overview” section that provides detailed information about your connected devices, such as serial numbers, model details, backup dates, and more. The “Data” section gives you easy access to saved media, messages, contacts, and other important content.

Other notable updates include a dedicated battery management section, support for the new Vision Pro, remote pairing capabilities, and a dark mode option. These enhancements ensure that iMazing 3 is not just a tool, but a comprehensive solution for device management.

Manage your iPad or iPhone like a pro

iMazing 3 is designed to offer unparalleled control over your iPadOS or iOS devices. Whether you need to transfer files, back up your data, or run diagnostics, iMazing 3 provides the tools you need. Its intuitive drag-and-drop functionality allows you to move files effortlessly between your devices and your computer. The app supports both wired and wireless connections, giving you flexibility in how you manage your data.

One of the standout features is the ability to create local device snapshots. These snapshots can be encrypted to ensure your data remains secure, and because everything is stored locally, you never have to worry about your information being sent to the cloud. This makes iMazing 3 a trusted choice for anyone who values privacy and data security.

Built by DigiDNA, iMazing allows for selective transfer, backup, and restoration of data on your Apple devices. You can easily manage your media files, texts, and apps, giving you more control than Apple’s own tools typically allow.

The “Device Overview” section in iMazing 3 is particularly useful, offering detailed stats about your device, including model number, identifier and serial numbers, diagnostics, configurations, and battery health information. The “Data” section is equally impressive, providing easy access to all your saved content.

Pricing and availability

iMazing 3 is available for both Mac and Windows, and can be downloaded from the official iMazing website. The app offers a free trial, so you can explore all its features before making a purchase. With the introduction of iPadOS 17, Lock Screen widgets have arrived on the larger canvas of the iPad, offering enhanced functionality. Moreover, these widgets can be interactive, allowing you to perform various tasks even when your iPad is locked. These tasks encompass actions such as controlling Home devices, marking off Reminders, and managing music playback.

Adding widgets to your iPad Lock Screen

Incorporating widgets into your Lock Screen on iPadOS 17 closely parallels the process on the iPhone, albeit with some layout differences. This variance is due to the iPad’s unique ability to display Lock Screen widgets in both portrait and landscape orientations.

Prerequisites:

  • An iPad that supports this feature
  • iPadOS 17, scheduled for release on September 18th

Here’s a quick overview:

  1. Wake your iPad and press and hold the Lock Screen.
  2. Select “Customize.”
  3. Tap “Add Widgets.”
  4. Choose from the available options.
  5. Tap the “X” and then confirm with “Done.”

For a more detailed approach, follow these steps:

  1. Access the Lock Screen of your iPad without unlocking it.
  2. Tap and hold the screen.
  3. Click the “Customize” button that appears.
  4. Opt for “Lock Screen.”
  5. Tap “Add Widgets.”
  6. Select one of the suggested widgets or tap an app from the list to add a widget for that specific app.
  7. Choose your preferred widget style from the available options and tap it or drag it into the widget bar.
  8. Repeat these steps for any additional widgets you want to add.
  9. To remove a widget, tap the “X” icon in the top left corner of the widget.
  10. After adding all desired widgets, either close the widget selection window by tapping the “X” icon or by tapping anywhere outside of the window.
  11. Confirm by tapping “Done,” and your updated Lock Screen is saved.

Using Lock Screen widgets on iPad

Once you’ve added widgets to your Lock Screen, they’ll be readily accessible every time you wake your iPad without unlocking it.

  • Wake your iPad by tapping the screen or pressing the top button.
  • The widgets will be displayed on the Lock Screen without requiring an unlock.
  • To open the associated app, simply tap the widget (note that unlocking your iPad may be necessary).
  • Interactive widgets enable you to perform actions without launching the app or unlocking your iPad. For instance, with a Reminders widget, you can mark a Reminder as completed by tapping it within the widget.

Removing widgets from your iPad Lock Screen

  1. Begin by following the first step mentioned earlier to access the Lock Screen customization screen.
  2. Select one of the added widgets.
  3. Tap the “X” icon for the widget you wish to remove. Repeat this for each added widget you want to eliminate.
  4. Next, tap the “X” icon located next to the “Search Widgets” box.
  5. Finally, confirm by tapping “Done” and then the Lock Screen tile to exit the editing screen.

Everyone might have encountered issues with iPads now and then. Usually, most issues can be fixed with a reboot, but if the issue persists and makes the device unusable, it needs to be addressed instantly.

While these issues can be fixed by following lengthy and confusing tutorials or spending hefty at service centers, it would be great if there is a simple and reliable alternative.

For this purpose, we looked for solutions and found tools designed to tackle iPadOS system problems. This article will feature arguably the top 7 tools to help repair iPadOS devices; the best part is they can also repair iOS devices.

Top 7 Tools to Repair iPadOS System Problems

1. Reiboot – Simplifies troubleshooting and fixes issues with a single click

ReiBoot, developed by Tenorshare, is an iPad repair utility aiming to simplify the process of troubleshooting and fixing various iPad issues. This tool stands out for its ability to fix software-related problems across most iPad and iPhone models.

Notably, iPad users use it frequently to fix issues like getting stuck on the boot logo, recovery mode, etc., and the reason for choosing it is that it can fix most software issues with just a single click, eliminating the need for lengthy procedures.

While Reiboot focuses more on fixing iOS related issues, the 150 fixes offered can be applied to iPadOS software issues and do the fixing effortlessly. To test its potential, we connected our old iPad to ReiBoot, which was endlessly rebooting or being stuck at the boot logo, and to our surprise, the issues were resolved when we tried several fixes.

Regarding modes, the basic repair mode does fix most iPadOS software-related issues. However, if the issue turns out to be critical, the deep repair mode comes to the save, but at the cost of data loss as the iPad restores and newer or compatible iPadOS is usually installed.

Considering it has a lot of fixes offered, we could put a few to the test. While not every fix can fix the iPad, you must be specific while selecting the issue for the tool to perform well.

Even though this approach makes the fix easy, a person lacking awareness of the issue might struggle to get the issue sorted instantly.

Pros

  • Comprehensive solution for iPadOS system issues
  • Single-click feature for most problems
  • Versatile with a wide range of iPad models
  • Allows iOS/iPadOS downgrading without data loss or jailbreaking

Cons

  • Deep repair mode may result in data loss
  • Occasional tool lags require system restart

Pricing: Free version available; plans start at $24.95 per month

2. Dr.Fone – System Repair – Best tool for fixing iPadOS issues without data loss

While testing Dr.Fone – System Repair, we have tried almost every tool offered and identified its strengths and potential improvements. What stood out the best for us was its exceptional ability to fix iPad issues that iPadOS causes.

Like every other tool in this segment, this tool is also focused on fixing iPhone issues, but don’t worry, as the fixes offered are compatible with iPads and iPods.

Many of us might have gone with iTunes to fix the iPad issues, and as the only option for any fix is to restore, the final consequence is data loss. This is where Dr.Fone comes in, as it addresses and fixes many iPad, iPhone, and iPod issues without losing data.

However, data loss is inevitable when opting for the “Advanced Mode”; we suggest using it if the issues aren’t fixed in the standard mode.

Like Reiboot, apart from fixing software-related issues, you are also offered the unique feature of rolling back their iPads to an earlier version without the hassles of data loss or the complexities of jailbreaking.

Even though this tool is ideal for iPads and iPhones, we have noticed better results while fixing Android devices, and we believe there’s room for improvement regarding the fixes offered to iPads.

Pros

  • Efficiently address iPad, iPod, and iPhone issues
  • Safeguards data during most repair processes
  • Allows iOS/iPadOS downgrading without data loss or jailbreaking

Cons

  • Advanced Mode results in data loss
  • The fixes could be improved for iPhones and iPads.

Pricing: Free version available; iOS Toolkit starts at $99.95 per year

3. AnyFix – Comprehensive tool with a user-friendly interface

For Apple users, encountering issues on iPads, iPhones, or even iPods can be frustrating, as fixing them isn’t like Android devices. For this scenario, you can consider checking out AnyFix by iMobie, a comprehensive solution to all iPad and iPhone issues.

Like Reiboot and Dr.Fone, AnyFix has a user-friendly interface that tech-savvy individuals and novices can use. We have suggested AnyFix in this compilation as the fixes turned out to be great, and we felt it is a great repair tool with impressive flexibility while working on iPads and iPhones.

AnyFix has got you covered, from accessing recovery mode, device resetting, and iOS/iPadOS version management to troubleshooting iTunes issues. Also, the tool provides different repair modes, each focusing on minimizing data loss concerns.

While we had no data loss with the standard mode, the deep/advanced mode has erased data on our iPad, which is inevitable as it restored the iPad. Also, we are disappointed with the free version as it has many paywall restrictions that are significantly more than Reiboot and Dr.Fone. Hence, to experience its full potential, you are forced to purchase the premium version.

Pros

  • Versatile tool for iPad, iPhone, and iPod system issues
  • User-friendly repair modes with minimal data loss
  • It comes with comprehensive features that help take full control of the iPad

Cons

  • The full feature set is available only in the paid version
  • Advanced mode erases all data on the iPad

Pricing: Free version available; plans start at $35.39, billed every three months.

4. Joyoshare UltFix – Best beginner tool to fix iPadOS issues

Joyoshare Ultfix can be a great tool for fixing software-related issues on iPhones and iPads. While it has a user-friendly interface, the best part is the ability of even beginners to use the fixes to restore their iPads and iPhones effortlessly.

For instance, if your iPad suddenly freezes or frequently reboots, considering it is software-related, Joyoshare Ultfix can fix it immediately in a few steps.

While it’s compatible with many Apple devices, from iPhones to iPads, you must identify the issue and choose the fix carefully. The tool’s advanced and ultimate modes might lead to data loss during system recovery, which is inevitable. However, its perpetual plan at an affordable price is what makes it stand out.

Pros

  • Simple user interface
  • Compatible with a variety of iOS devices
  • Quickly resolves a wide range of problems

Cons

  • Data loss during system recovery is possible
  • Recovery times are slower than those of competitors

Pricing: Free version available; perpetual plans start at $49.95

5. MyFone Fixppo – Reliable choice for iPad issues with broad compatibility

When resolving iPad issues, iMyFone Fixppo stands out as a reliable choice. Not only is it limited to iPhones and iPods, but its fixes are also limited to iPads. Imagine using your iPad, which continuously displays software-related issues; with iMyFone Fixppo, you can fix the issues immediately.

iMyFone Fixppo is compatible with all iOS devices and versions, making it a versatile choice. Even if you’re not tech-savvy, its straightforward design ensures a hassle-free experience. Like every prominent tool, the reset can be done without a password.

Moreover, transitioning between recovery modes is just a click away. However, while the trial version is free, it offers limited functionalities. And for those on a budget, its premium plans might feel expensive compared to other alternatives in the market.

Pros

  • Broad compatibility with all iOS devices, including iPads
  • User-friendly design suitable for beginners
  • Simplifies the process of toggling between recovery modes

Cons

  • Limited features in the free trial version.
  • Premium plans might be pricier than some competitors

Pricing: Free version available; plans start at $39.99

6. UltFone iOS System Repair – Best one-step fixes and seamless recovery mode

UltFone iOS System Repair is arguably one of the great tools that can easily fix iPad, iPhone, and iPod issues. During our testing, we could effectively fix a few software issues on the iPad, and none were repeated.

While the interface is easy to use, the best part is it has fixes that can be done in one step, and getting in and out of recovery mode is easy.

The 150 fixes focused more on iOS than iPadOS, which felt a little disappointing. However, the repair modes offered focus on preserving the data, but the advanced modes can cause data loss. On the other hand, resetting iPads and iPhones can be done without passwords or iTunes, along with the ability to unlock screen lock.

Even though the plans are expensive, if you opt for a perpetual license, you will arguably have one of the best iPad repair tools.

Pros

  • Seamless transition into and out of recovery mode
  • Comprehensive solutions for a vast array of iOS issues
  • Password-less device reset and unlocking capabilities

Cons

  • Premium features come at a higher price point, forced to purchase a perpetual license

Pricing: Free version available; plans start at $24.95 per month

iTunes – Best tool to solve critical issues on Apple devices

Unlike the above tools, iTunes is the tool Apple offers for their users to manage their Apple devices. While iTunes doesn’t offer any fixes, it must be used as a repair tool with some learning.

There lies a common fix for all issues on iTunes, which is ideal for critical software-related problems, but for generic fixes, it isn’t the right tool, as data loss is inevitable. Hence, if you’re aware of using iTunes and if the iPad issue is critical, iTunes is arguably the best option than the above mentioned.

With everything said, don’t get the wrong idea about iTunes, as it is a great tool to manage and fix Apple devices. However, it isn’t for beginners as it can be too complex, and there is potential for making irrecoverable mistakes that can leave the device bricked.

Pros

  • Official Apple tool for device management
  • Ideal for addressing critical software issues
  • A comprehensive tool for managing and fixing all Apple devices

Cons

  • Not suitable for generic fixes as data loss is inevitable
  • Complexity makes it unsuitable for beginners
  • Risk of irreversible errors; can lead to bricked devices

Pricing: Completely free

Wrapping up

This comprehensive review delved into the top 7 tools to address iPadOS system problems. From ReiBoot’s single-click solutions to iTunes, Apple’s official device management tool, each offers unique features and capabilities.

While some tools like Reiboot, Dr.Fone, and AnyFix offer great fixes and prioritize data preservation, others like iTunes demand a steeper learning curve but provide robust solutions for critical issues.

On the other hand, tools like Ultfix, Fixppo, and UltFone iOS System Repair are great tools but can be alternatives to our top three. Hence, choosing a tool that aligns with your technical expertise and the severity of the device issue is essential.

Apple’s iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 have been the talk of the tech world since their announcement. On June 5, 2023, Apple unveiled these new operating systems at the WWDC, releasing the first developer beta shortly after. By July 2023, Apple had rolled out the first public beta, giving a broader audience a taste of the new features and enhancements. However, as with any major software update, the beta versions of iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 are far from perfect.

Thousands of early adopters and developers have reported a myriad of issues, ranging from minor glitches to more significant system malfunctions. This guide aims to address these concerns, providing a comprehensive list of the most common problems and their potential fixes.

Most common iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 issues and how to fix them

Whether you’re a developer testing out the new iPadOS 17 or an enthusiastic Apple fan who jumped on the beta bandwagon, we’ve got you covered.

Issue #1: iOS 17/iPadOS 17 installation failed

One of the most commonly reported issues with the iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 beta versions is the failure during the installation process. Users have described scenarios where the update seems to be progressing as expected, only to halt abruptly and display an error message. If you’re facing this issue, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate through it:

  • Check Storage: Ensure that your device has adequate storage space for the update. You can do this by going to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage.
  • Stable Internet Connection: A consistent and robust internet connection is crucial for a successful update. If you’re using Wi-Fi, ensure it’s stable. If possible, avoid public networks during the update process.
  • Force Restart: Sometimes, a simple force restart can resolve the issue. For iPhones with Face ID, press and release the Volume Up button, press and release the Volume Down button, and then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. For other devices, the method may vary.
  • Update via iTunes: If the over-the-air update fails, consider updating your device using iTunes. Connect your device to a computer, open iTunes, select your device, and choose Update.
  • Check Apple Servers: Sometimes, the problem isn’t on your end. Apple servers might be overloaded, especially shortly after a new beta release. You can check the status of Apple’s servers here.

If all else fails, consider waiting for a few hours or even a day before attempting the update again. Apple often releases minor updates shortly after a major one to address such issues.

Issue #2: No calculator app in iPadOS 17

With the introduction of iPadOS 17, many users were surprised to find that the native Calculator app, a staple on iPhones, was conspicuously absent from their iPads. This omission left many wondering if it was an oversight or a deliberate decision by Apple. The Calculator app has been a fundamental utility for quick calculations, and its absence on a device as versatile as the iPad was puzzling for many.

To address this gap, here are some recommended steps and alternatives:

  • Check the App Store: While the native Calculator app might be missing, there are numerous third-party calculator apps available on the App Store. Some popular options include Calculator: Pro, Calcbot 2, and MyScript Calculator.
  • Use Siri: Siri can handle basic arithmetic. Simply activate Siri and ask your math-related question.
  • Web-Based Calculators: Consider using web-based calculators like Google’s built-in calculator. Just type your equation into the search bar, and you’ll get an instant answer.
  • Wait for Updates: Apple often listens to user feedback. If enough users express the need for the Calculator app on iPadOS, Apple might reintroduce it in future updates.

Remember, while the absence of the native Calculator app might be inconvenient, there are plenty of alternatives available to ensure you can crunch numbers when needed.

Issue #3: Apple Music crossfade crashing settings

Upon exploring the new features of iOS 17, many users were eager to try out the crossfade functionality in Apple Music, a feature that allows for a seamless transition between songs. However, excitement quickly turned to frustration for some, as they found that attempting to adjust the crossfade settings resulted in the Settings app crashing. To navigate this issue and enjoy a smooth music listening experience, consider the following steps:

  • Update Your Device: Ensure that your device is running the latest version of iOS 17. Apple frequently releases patches to address known bugs, and an update might contain the fix you need.
  • Restart Apple Music: Force quit the Apple Music app by swiping it away from the app switcher and then relaunching it. This can often resolve minor glitches.
  • Reinstall Apple Music: As a last resort, consider deleting the Apple Music app and then reinstalling it from the App Store. This can help if the issue is due to a corrupted app installation.
  • Report the Issue: If none of the above solutions work, it’s essential to report the problem to Apple. This helps them identify and address such issues in future updates.

Issue #4: Incoming calls not visible on iOS 17

After eagerly updating to iOS 17, a segment of users found themselves in a perplexing situation. While their devices audibly signalled incoming calls through ringtones or vibrations, the call notifications were mysteriously absent from their screens. Missing important calls can be more than just an inconvenience; it can have real-world implications, especially for those awaiting crucial calls.

  • Do Not Disturb Mode: This mode, when activated, silences calls, alerts, and notifications. Navigate to Settings > Do Not Disturb and ensure it’s deactivated.
  • Device Restart: Often, minor software glitches can be resolved by simply restarting your device. Hold down the Power button and follow the on-screen instructions to reboot your iDevice.
  • Third-party App Interference: Some apps, especially those with access to calls and notifications, might interfere with call displays. Reflect on any apps you’ve recently installed and consider temporary uninstallation to diagnose the issue.
  • Network Reset: Sometimes, network-related issues can cause call disruptions. Resetting network settings can help. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Remember, this will erase Wi-Fi passwords and VPN settings.

Issue #5: Apple Mail app draining battery

The excitement of exploring iOS 17’s new features was dampened for some users when they noticed their device’s battery depleting faster than usual. The culprit? The Apple Mail app, which seemed to be consuming an inordinate amount of battery.

Fetch Data Settings: The frequency with which your device checks for new emails can impact battery life. Navigate to Settings > Mail > Accounts > Fetch New Data and opt for a less frequent interval.

  • Background App Refresh: This feature allows apps to refresh content in the background. However, it can be a battery drainer. Turn it off specifically for Mail by going to Settings > General > Background App Refresh.
  • Alternative Email Apps: While Apple works on a fix, consider using other reputable email apps that might be more battery-efficient.

Issue #6: iPad and iPhone not charging on iPadOS 17 beta 2

Some iPad users found that their devices wouldn’t charge after updating to iPadOS 17 Beta 2.

  • Check the Cable and Adapter: Ensure that you’re using an Apple-certified cable and adapter.
  • Force Restart: Hold down the Power button and Home button (or Volume Down on newer iPads) until the Apple logo appears.
  • Inspect the Charging Port: Ensure there’s no debris or damage in the iPad’s charging port.

Issue #7: Wallpapers not working on iOS 17 beta 2

A device’s wallpaper adds a personal touch to it. However, post the iOS 17 Beta 2 update, users found their chosen wallpapers either turning pitch black or not displaying as intended.

  • Reapply the Wallpaper: Navigate to Settings > Wallpaper > Choose a New Wallpaper and reselect your preferred image.
  • Update iOS: Ensure you’re on the latest version of iOS 17, as Apple might have fixed this bug in subsequent releases.
  • Avoid Live Wallpapers: As a temporary measure, consider using static wallpapers until the issue is resolved.
  • Image Format: Ensure your custom wallpaper is in a format compatible with iOS, like .jpg or .png.

Issue #8: Apple mail notifications not working

For many, the Apple Mail app is a primary communication tool, making timely notifications crucial. However, some users have reported that after updating to iOS 17, they no longer receive notifications for new emails, potentially causing them to miss important messages.

  • Notification Settings: First, ensure that notifications for the Mail app are enabled. Go to Settings > Notifications > Mail and ensure that the ‘Allow Notifications’ toggle is on.
  • Email Account Sync: Navigate to Settings > Mail > Accounts and ensure that the ‘Fetch New Data’ setting is set to ‘Push’ for real-time email notifications.
  • Do Not Disturb Mode: Ensure that your device isn’t in ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode, as this can silence notifications.
  • Re-add Email Account: As a last resort, consider removing and re-adding your email account to the Mail app. This can refresh the connection and resolve notification issues.

Issue #9: Cannot scrub through videos in full screen in iOS 17

Watching videos is a common pastime for many users, especially on the iPad. However, a peculiar issue has emerged where users are unable to scrub through videos when in full-screen mode, limiting their ability to rewind or fast-forward content.

  • Video App Update: If you’re using a third-party app to watch videos, ensure it’s updated to the latest version compatible with iOS 17.
  • Screen Orientation: Try rotating your device to change the screen orientation. Sometimes, changing from portrait to landscape (or vice versa) can resolve playback controls.
  • Clear Cache: For apps like Safari, clearing the cache might help. Go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data.

Issue #10: Signal strength bar disappear

A stable network connection is fundamental for any mobile device. Some users have noticed that the signal strength bar occasionally disappears, leaving them uncertain about their network status.

  • Airplane Mode: Toggle Airplane mode on and then off. This can refresh your device’s network connection.
  • SIM Card Check: Ensure that your SIM card is properly inserted. If possible, try the SIM card on another device to rule out hardware issues.
  • Network Settings Reset: Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will erase Wi-Fi passwords and VPN settings, so ensure you have them backed up.
  • Carrier Update: Sometimes, carriers release updates to improve network connectivity. Check for any available updates in Settings > General > About.

Issue #11: Music app not working

The Apple Music app is central to the iOS experience for many. However, post the iOS 17 update, some users have found the app to be unresponsive or crashing unexpectedly.

  • App Update: Ensure that the Music app is updated to the latest version available on the App Store.
  • Force Quit and Restart: Swipe the app away from the app switcher to force quit, then relaunch it.
  • Library Sync: If your music library isn’t showing up, go to Settings > Music and ensure that ‘Sync Library’ is turned on.
  • Reinstall App: If the app continues to malfunction, consider deleting and reinstalling it from the App Store.

Issue #12: iOS 17 standby mode not working

Standby mode is essential for conserving battery life when the device is not in use. However, some users have reported that their devices don’t enter standby mode as expected, leading to unnecessary battery drain.

  • Button Check: Ensure that the power button on your device is functioning correctly. A faulty button might prevent the device from entering standby.
  • Background Apps: Some apps running in the background can prevent the device from going to standby. Consider closing unused apps.
  • Settings Reset: Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. This won’t erase personal data but will return settings to their defaults.
  • Battery Health: Check your device’s battery health in Settings > Battery > Battery Health. If the battery’s health is degraded, it might affect standby functionality.

Issue #13: Widgets disappear on the home screen

Widgets have become an integral part of the iOS experience, offering users quick access to information and app functionalities. However, a concerning issue has emerged where widgets sporadically disappear from the home screen, disrupting the user’s customized layout and access to essential data.

  • Widget Re-addition: Long-press on the home screen to enter ‘jiggle mode’. Tap the ‘+’ icon at the top left and re-add your desired widgets.
  • Device Restart: A simple restart can often refresh the system and bring back missing widgets.
  • Software Update: Ensure you’re running the latest version of iOS 17. Apple might have released patches to address such issues.
  • Reset Home Screen Layout: If widgets consistently disappear, consider resetting the home screen layout in Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout. Note: This will rearrange app icons to their default positions.

Issue #14: MP3 files not playing

Music enthusiasts have reported a peculiar issue where MP3 files, either downloaded or transferred to the device, refuse to play. This can be particularly distressing for those who rely on their devices for music playback, especially for files not available on streaming platforms.

  • File Compatibility: Ensure the MP3 files are not corrupted. Try playing them on a different device or software.
  • Storage Check: Ensure there’s sufficient storage on your device. A near-full storage might hinder file playback, so check it by heading over to Settings > General > [Device] Storage.
  • App Update: If you’re using a third-party app for music playback, ensure it’s updated and compatible with iOS 17.
  • Audio Settings: Navigate to Settings > Music > Playback & Downloads and ensure the ‘Optimize Storage’ option is turned off.

Issue #15: Personal voice not working with live speech

The ‘Personal Voice’ feature, which reads out content using a voice that sounds more natural, has been a significant addition to iOS. However, some users have found that this feature doesn’t work as expected with live speech, affecting accessibility functionalities.

  • Voice Download: Ensure the new voice is downloaded. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content > Voices and download the desired voice.
  • Network Connection: A stable internet connection is required for voice download and certain functionalities.
  • Feedback to Apple: If the issue persists, use the Feedback app to report the problem, helping Apple address it in future updates.

Apple has been presenting its iPad lineup as ‘your next computer’ for a long while.

Some of its ads imagine a scenario where the upcoming generation does not even know what a conventional computer is. However, since their beginning, iPad devices have severely lacked in an area: multitasking.

Sure, the company did introduce split-screen views in recent years. But it wasn’t enough for most people to ditch their computers and start using their iPad for everyday digital needs.

Stage Manager, introduced in the latest iPadOS 16, is set to change all that!

We won’t lie; we have been excited about Stage Manager since WWDC 2022 when the company previewed both macOS Monterey and iPadOS 16. The idea of using the iPad for a fully-fledged multitasking experience intrigued as like anything.

So, as soon as we got our hands on a compatible iPad (more on that later), we got to work. We still wanted to wait until iPadOS 16 reached a more refined stage: at least the Public Betas.

We have been testing iPadOS 16 Public Beta on an iPad Air 5th Generation, equipped with the M1 chip in the past week.

We thought some of you would want to know more about and test Stage Manager on iPad. Keeping this in mind, we prepared the ultimate guide to Stage Manager on iPad. Please note that we won’t be talking about other cool features on iPadOS 16.

An Introduction to Stage Manager on iPad

Let’s listen to what Apple says about Stage Manager on iPad.

“Stage Manager is an entirely new multitasking experience that automatically organizes apps and windows, making it quick and easy to switch between tasks.”

According to our experience, Stage Manager can change how you use your iPad. For the first time, you don’t have to swipe between different screens to access different apps. Also, unlike the Split Screen view, you are not restricted to two apps. So, you can have as many apps as you have on the screen.

The screenshot shows that I have Mail, Weather, and Gmail apps on a single screen. The three dots on the top of the window allow you to zoom, minimize, or close the app. You can also open another window of the same app.

When you minimize one of these apps, it gets arranged on the left side of the screen. You can click on or drag it to bring it to the front. Similarly, if you want to keep an app aside, you can pull it to the side — which minimizes the app.

So, as Apple says, Stage Manager takes multitasking on iPad to a different level. For example, I can create a Word document while keeping the Wikipedia app open. More importantly, I can freely resize these windows to create a seamless working experience.

We hope you have a clear idea about Stage Manager on iPad.

Stage Manager and External Display

Stage Manager essentially turns your iPad into a fully-fledged computer capable of multitasking. But don’t you think iPad screens are too small for fully-fledged multitasking?

This is where External Display support for the iPad comes into play.

Of course, iPads have always been able to connect to external displays. But, it was just display mirroring.

RELATED: How to Mirror iPad Screen to Mac / MacBook

Even though some people used display mirroring to set up their iPad workstations, it was barely a reasonable option.

But, iPadOS 16 changes that as well. Starting from this version, M1-equipped iPads can connect to external displays with a resolution of up to 6K.

More importantly, instead of mirroring the primary display, an iPad can now render a new display supporting Stage Manager. As you can see, I have opened a full-sized window of Word for iPad on an external display.

The dock and the menu bar are a mixture of iPadOS and macOS UI designs.

You can instantly move app windows between your iPad screen and the external display. Transferring data and images between apps is also more accessible than ever before.

In other words, external display support for iPad is a complementary feature for Stage Manager.

Stage Manager on iPad: Availability

Here’s the sad part.

Stage Manager is available on iPad devices equipped with an M1 chip. It currently means the iPad Air 5 (M1) and the iPad Pro lineup. So, if you have an iPad without the M1 chip, you cannot enjoy Stage Manager or its 6K external display support.

According to Apple, only the desktop-grade M1 chip has the power and capacity to manage multitasking, as assured by Stage Manager. However, we should also consider that all supported devices come with 8GB of RAM, which could be a factor.

Needless to say, this point has bummed out many enthusiastic iPad owners.

To use Stage Manager and external display support, you should upgrade to an M1-based iPad (like we did.)

But, if you have a compatible device, read along.

How to Get Stage Manager on iPad?

Unfortunately, you cannot get Stage Manager on iPad as a standalone feature. It is available only as a part of the iPadOS 16 updates.

If you are waiting for the official and stable version, you must wait until Fall 2022. While we do not have an exact date, we expect Apple to roll out the iPadOS 16 update (alongside iOS 16 and macOS Monterey) in October 2022.

So, your only option to test Stage Manager is to install the public beta of iPadOS 16 on your iPad.

The public beta is more stable than developer beta versions, but you will face some bugs and crashes. So, if you are ready to take the risk, you can follow the steps below to install the iPadOS public beta on your device.

  1. First, you have to sign up for the Apple Software Beta Program through the official website
  2. Then, you can download the Beta profile for your iPad
  3. Once you have installed the Beta profile, you will have to restart your iPad
  4. Now, you can go to Settings -> General -> Software Update -> Check for Updates
  5. You can find the iPadOS 16 update and install it.

Once you have installed iPadOS 16 on the device, you can go to the Control Center and tap on Stage Manager to turn on the feature.

You can also long-press the button to decide whether you want to show minimized apps and the dock.

That’s it. You can now enjoy all the multitasking abilities from Stage Manager on iPad.

Our Experience with the iPadOS 16 Public Beta

Even though the overall experience is fine, Stage Manager is not at its finest point. Many apps, including the ones from Apple, need optimization for Stage Manager. For example, the system crashed when we tried to open multiple windows and resize them. Of course, we believe Apple will fix these issues by the time of the stable release.

Stage Manager on iPad FAQ

How do I turn on Stage Manager on iPad Pro?

Once you have installed iPadOS 16 on your iPad Pro, you can quickly turn on Stage Manager. You have to go to the Control Center and tap on the Stage Manager button. Your iPad will ask for confirmation when you enable Stage Manager for the first time.

Does iPad Mini have Stage Manager?

No, iPad Mini does not have Stage Manager support. As confirmed by Apple, Stage Manager and external display support are available only for iPad devices equipped with an M1 chip. Since it is not the case with the iPad Mini, the popular iPad will not get Stage Manager. It’s a bummer, we know.

Will Stage Manager work on all iPads?

No, Stage Manager will not work on all iPads. Your iPad needs to have an M1 chip inside to support Stage Manager.

Conclusion

Thumbs up if you could install iPadOS 16 beta and try Stage Manager.

Don’t worry if you think it’s too risky. You can simply wait for a few weeks until the Fall arrives. Then, you’d have access to a more stable version of Stage Manager on iPad.

In its Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month, Apple unveiled the new iPadOS 16  Since this was a huge milestone in the history of iPads and the development of iPadOS as a true alternative to macOS, we thought we should bring this news to our readers, and also share our take on this new upgrade

The new iPadOS 16 comes with a lot of new features but the most important feature is the Stage Manager.

Stage Manager: what does it offer?

If you’re a multitasker, this feature is just what you need. The Stage Manager feature allows you to have a clear view of the different programs and steps involved in the project that you’ve organized on the left-hand side of your screen. If you’d like to place your windows somewhere else, this can be done easily by clicking and dragging them off the stage. Or you can also shrink your windows by hovering over them with your mouse and then dragging them down.

iWith this new feature, iPad users can now finally enjoy seamless group creation of various-sized windows for more flawless and efficient multitasking. The window on which your app is open will be prominently displayed at the center – surrounded by other opened apps or pages that allow quick glimpses into what else needs attention when switching back.

The Stage Manager utility on the M1-powered devices namely iPad Pro and iPad Air unlocks the support for full external display. The good thing about that, the support extends for resolutions of up to 6K. Do you know what that means? Well, arrange an ideal workspace that is now comfortable for you. Also, you can work with up to four apps on the iPad and four apps on the external display.

Stage Manager: compatible devices

Due to the higher processing power required, the Stage Manager app will not work on all iPads that run iPadOS 16. This app is limited to running on the latest iPads that are equipped with the M1 chip. Currently, the iPads that fall under this umbrella are:

  • iPad Air 2022
  • 11-inch iPad Pro 2021
  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2021

Stage Manager and support for external display

Using the Stage Manager app, you get the awesome ability to connect your iPad to external displays while working. With the help of Stage Manager, you can simultaneously work with up to four apps on the iPad and up to four apps on the external display. That is truly an amazing experience for any M1 iPad user out there that regularly engages in multi-tasking during work.

Stage Manager: ONLY works on non-M1 macs

According to Apple, the Stage Manager feature is limited to only M1 chips, because RAM is a bit less expensive on those processes and allows for a lot smoother multitasking experience in comparison with other iPadOS versions. This lets apps deal with your storage and effectively convert the same into RAM. Keep in mind that each app can ask for up to 16GB of memory. As Stage Manager can run up to eight apps at once – most of which have a way of asking for 16GB of memory – it demands a lot of resources. As such, the new window management feature on the newer iPadOS platform needs M1 chips due to their higher RAM capabilities.

Other new features of iPadOS 16

Besides Stage Manager, let’s take a look at the other features introduced by Apple this year in the iPadOS 16.

Message App Update

The update given to the Message App in the iPadOS 16 makes it easy to start banding and managing shared content across various apps like Keynote, Files, Numbers, Pages, and Notes. You, as a user, will need to keep in mind that when anyone tends to forward an invitation for Collaboration via text messages, everyone sitting on the thread gets automatically added to the concerned document. They can then stay updated while using Collaboration because they can see updates whenever a reply is made.

It is also possible for you to switch into the associated Messages conversation. Moreover, you can just tap by replying right within Messages because of its inherent efficiency. You can also make changes and updates to messages you’ve recently sent or quickly recall and redeliver a message that you might have accidentally deleted. That way, your most recent conversation history always stays fresh for you in its entirety. Additionally, with the “last seen” status, you can tell if your friends are actively engaged in their conversations with you or not so that you can decide whether or not to remind them of what they discussed the last time you guys were together.

Freeform

Freeform, a new collaboration app with a flexible canvas allows users to see and share content through an in-app messaging feature that lives alongside the ability to add content or make edits. Freeform allows other collaborators the ability to view new contributions or changes as they happen, all from within their own thread amongst other threads.

Since it has a canvas that can be freely shaped and sized to support any type of development project, you can safely collaborate on many different projects. This portable utility works perfectly with Apple Pencil on iPadOS 16 devices or later. With so many different design apps out there, we find it most refreshing that the straightforwardness of this application’s name embodies the transparency and comprehensibility of its components.

Updated Mail App

In the updated Mail app, you get many handy features that will make your workflow a lot smoother than before. In this update, you get the ability to

  • Schedule emails to be sent,
  • Cancel an email before it reaches the recipient.
  • Move sent emails to the top of their box to facilitate a follow-up.
  • Surface up old emails with the Remind Later feature.
  • Get notified if you forget to include an attachment or recipient etc.
  • Search the app easily to locate contacts, files etc.

All these features come together to give you a vastly superior experience in using the iPadOS 16.

iCloud Shared Photo Library

iCloud Shared Photos is the best way to get your family and friends to share all of the photos they have taken with you. Using this ingenious photography app, anyone who has ever taken a photograph of you, your kids, or a niece/nephew, can upload it to your iCloud account where everyone in your family can view these images at any time.

And you know what the best thing is? If someone changes anything about an image like adding a text caption or editing it somehow then everyone else will know as soon as they hit save. Also, whenever any member of the group makes any changes to the images then everybody else will be informed accordingly and automatically given the option to download them for themselves.

Safari Update

In the new iPadOS 16, a new feature has been introduced in the Safari app. This feature, known as Shared tabs, is a brilliant new feature that allows you to work collaboratively with someone over various tabs as they browse the web. Not only do they have the ability to share and discuss certain websites or online articles with you, but they also have the option of conveying their thoughts and opinions on something in particular by editing or adding text directly to the very website they’re looking at.

Additionally, you can now log in to sites using a Passkey method. The concerned passkeys of the users are kept safely on their iPads. Yes, and these are specific to the sites you create them for. No hackers can get to them because passkeys are entirely unique digital keys that stay on your device and never get stored on any servers.

Weather App

Another new feature in the iPadOS 16 is the introduction of the Weather app to the iPads. Armed with eye-catching animations, the app allows you to grab the latest and critical weather information. It even allows you to explore maps and check precipitation, air quality, and temperature by employing a single tap. Not just that, the utility goes a step ahead and ensures users are notified if and when a severe weather alert is issued in the concerned area. Other features include checking the air quality using a color-coded scale and more.

Live Text

Using built-in intelligence, the Live Text utility brilliantly recognizes text in photos throughout the system. The fantastic thing is that the same is now available for videos too. Yes, you can interact with the texts sitting in paused frames. With a single tap on a video, you can quickly translate your text to several languages or easilyconvert currencies without having to fully load a webpage. Visual Lookup has also been enhanced so you can pinch the subject from any image or isolate the desired subject by removing the background with a single tap. This will allow you to give it more capabilities to recognize photos of things such as birds, insects, and statues.

Conclusion

After reading this post till the end, we hope that you’ll have gained some insight about the iPadOS 16 as well as the new features announced in it, particularly Stage Manager. Even though this version of the iPadOS isn’t available to the public till September, all the features being announced lead us to believe that this is going to be a turning point for iPads as a whole. If you want to read more posts on such topics, stay tuned.

It’s not unexpected for new software updates to have bugs. Yet, no one could have accounted for the magnitude of issues the iPadOS 15 will surprise us. Even the relief of having the M1 chip on iPad Air 5 and iPad Pro is dulled with the iPadOS 15.

The iPadOS 15.4 version is improved on iPad Air 5, but there’s a long way before Apple fixes every issue. When the initial bugs were discovered, Apple updated the iPad Pro 2021 with bug fixes. We might even move straight to iPadOS 16 by then. In the meantime, we can help you with specific iPadOS 15 problems and their solutions.

13 most annoying iPadOS 15 problems and solutions

#1 Storage Full Error

If your iPad storage is close to complete, a notification alerts you of the situation. They will advise you to not download anything else unless you get rid of unimportant materials.

On the iPadOS 15, though, these storage full alert messages are arriving even if there’s plenty of space in your cloud. Some users have gone through the trouble of cleaning the storage and still continue to receive this message.

One way of getting rid of this issue is by waiting  for the latest software update to reach your Phone. Once you download the bug fixes and restart your iPad, this issue should disappear. In fact, those with iPadOS 15.4 don’t seem to have this trouble.

In case you need more help, click here and dedicate a few minutes to reading the guide on cleaning iPad storage.

#2 Battery Draining Too Fast

Not long after upgrading to the iPadOS 15.4, users have been experiencing rapid battery drain on their iPad. According to support, this isn’t a bug but rather normal behavior after a software update. It takes 48 hours before the apps get used to new software.

Yet, the 15.4.1 update had a fix for the battery drain not long after.

If you can’t upgrade to 15.4.1 yet, you might try conserving the battery via these methods.

  • Tap open Settings.
  • Look for General.
  • Find Background App Refresh.
  • Turn the toggle off on it.
  • Swipe back.
  • Find Privacy.
  • Tap on it and scroll down to Location Services.
  • Toggle it off.
  • Again, go to Battery under Settings.
  • Look for the most battery-draining apps.
  • Tap on it. Turn off the permissions you could do without on those apps for the time being.
  • This will limit their working, thus taking less of the battery.

We do have a detailed write-up on this particular issue, make you go through that one, once you’re done reading the other troubles iPadOS 15 users face.

#3 Joining by Phone Isn’t Working On Google Meet

If your iPad has the M1 chip, you’ve been pretty excited about using the center stage feature to get on video calls. If the iPadOS 15 update doesn’t let them join by Phone, that’s a bit of an impossibility.

The issue is mainly present in iPadOS 15.4 and later versions. Some tried to delete Google Meet and install it again to see if the Join by phone feature worked. Unfortunately, the results were negative. However, this issue does have a fix.

Join the Apple Calendar to the Google Calendar account. Users have been reportedly successful in joining by Phone with this mini workaround.

#4 Wi-Fi Related Issues

The latest iPad models promised high-speed Wi-Fi. Yet, the iPadOS 15 bugs don’t allow Apple to stick to its promises. You have probably noticed the slow loading time for YouTube videos or experienced the Wi-Fi disconnecting at random.

One of those cases seems to be fixed with a reset.

  • Open Settings.
  • Tap on Wi-Fi.
  • Turn the toggle off for Wi-Fi.
  • Now, look for the connected modem or router name. Tap on the ‘i’ button next to it.
  • Select Forget this Network that appears at the top. You will need to input your Wi-Fi password again, so have it ready somewhere.
  • Turn the toggle on for Wi-Fi.
  • Search for your router connection. Once you find it, tap on it and fill in the password.

If this doesn’t help, resetting the entire Network setting could provide relief:

  • Find General from Settings.
  • Scroll down to Reset.
  • Inside Reset, there will be Reset Network Settings.

You will have to reconnect with every cellular or Wi-Fi network you have used after this hard Reset.

The same method applies to cellular and Bluetooth issues.

#5 Unresponsive Touchscreen

Considering we operate our iPhones and iPads primarily through touch, an unresponsive touchscreen is a different nightmare. It’s a weird issue where you can tap on Settings one second but can’t get into the General options no matter how many times you tap on it.

For iPads without a home button, it’s even more of a nightmare.

Until Apple releases a bug fix, the only thing you can do is force a restart.

  • Press the volume up button once.
  • Press the volume down button next.
  • Hold the power button until the Apple logo pops up.
  • For iPads with the home button, you have to press the power and home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.

You can restore your device entirely too. This will take your iPad to factory settings. So, if you have any essential items stored, backup your device on iTunes/ Finder.

#6 No Sound on Some Apps

Instagram and YouTube are those given, commonly used apps for everyone. Imagine our surprise when we found out the latest iPadOS 15 updates have been cutting off the sound on them. Or worse, the sound freezes at odd moments and then comes back.

Fortunately, most users reported fixing the issue with basic activities.

  • Go to the App Store.
  • Tap on your Profile icon.
  • Either hit update all for the apps. Or, click on each app and hit update. Ultimately, every app you download from the App store should be updated.

If the sound problem doesn’t solve after the update, delete and reinstall the app.

To delete the app:

  • Press and hold on to the app icon.
  • Tap on Remove App from the options.
  • Select the Delete App option under it.
  • Open App Store. Search for the app with the sound issue.
  • Tap on Install.

#7 Unable to Receive or Make Calls On FaceTime

Oddly enough, most of the bugs with iPadOS 15 appear to be centered around video and sound issues.

Some people can’t make calls on FaceTime no matter how many times they press the green call icon. Others can’t seem to receive any calls. The last thing we want to do is miss out on talking to a loved one because FaceTime won’t work.

Sometimes, it’s the cellular data that are unable to take the load of FaceTime. Turn off cellular data by:

  • Press the Settings icon.
  • Look for Cellular.
  • Scroll down and look for FaceTime.
  • Turn the toggle on for FaceTime if it’s off.

FaceTime should be turned on your iPad to work over Wi-Fi.

  • Tap on Settings.
  • Select FaceTime.
  • Is there a pop-up with the message ‘Waiting for activation’? If so, turn the toggle off for FaceTime.
  • Restart your iPad.
  • Go back into FaceTime settings. Turn the toggle back on.

If any of these hacks doesn’t fix your FaceTime issue, the only thing you can do is wait for a new software update.

#8 Wrong Email Notification Sound

If your work involves constantly replying to and sending emails, you are a fan of the email notification sound feature. When your iPad lets you know you have received an email with an audible sound.

Usually, you can choose a specific sound for email notifications. This way, you don’t mistake it with the message sound. Yet, some users have been receiving the Apple standard alert sound for emails after changing it.

It’s not a big issue, but it’s definitely annoying.

What can you do?

For most people, a restart seems to put things in order. After restarting, the notifications appear with the sounds you chose again.

#9 Can’t Turn off Read Receipts

The read receipts feature in messages effectively keeps track of who is ignoring you and who can’t wait to reply before you’ve hit send. A timestamp with the exact second they clicked open your message makes you anticipate their reply.

The downside of this feature is that the receiver gets receipts for when you read their message. The only way to not let them know is to turn off read receipts. Nor you or the other party would be able to get a peak on when a message is read this way.

Here is how you can turn it off:

  • Go to Settings on your iPad.
  • Find Messages.
  • Turn the toggle off for the Send Read Receipts.

However, after upgrading to the iPadOS 15, people reported that their read receipt is still on even after turning off the feature. The receiver of their text has informed them off, taking away the sender’s chance to quietly read the message and go about the day instead of hitting reply.

Unfortunately, this is a bug with no known solution. Some people have reported that restarting the device fixes the issue temporarily but persists after some time.

#10 Apple Map Keeps Crashing

Now, you probably are not using your iPad to navigate the streets. You would instead use your iPhone for those purposes. However, the iPadOS 15 appears to have dealt some odd damages to the Apple map.

So, whether you are using Apple Maps on your iPhone or iPad, you notice the number of times it keeps crashing.

The OS 15 also came with many beautiful features for the Apple Maps. This is the crux of the issue. At present, you should simply close the app. Try opening it again.

If that doesn’t work, force stop the app. Press on the app until you see the I icon. You will find the force stop option once you open it.

Then, tap open the app again.

If even that doesn’t help, restarting your iPad is in order.

#11 Gboard Crashes While Searching for Emoji

One of Google’s apps, Gboard, is a popular keyboard despite not being the default app for many Apple devices. Users can search for emojis, and GIFs, change languages, use predictive text, and even Google search directly for the keyboard.

The iPadOS 15 upgrades have somehow caused the Gboard to crash every time you tap on an emoji or use the search to look for GIFs or stickers.

The users have come up with temporary fixes such as:

  • Tap on Settings.
  • Scroll down to Keyboard.
  • Tap on Keyboards under it.
  • Find Gboard.
  • Turn off the toggle to Allow full access.

#12 Siri Shortcut Notification

Users have been seeing this notification “Allow to share data with (null)?” every time they use Siri Shortcut.

This is more annoying than a big issue. However, the point of using Siri Shortcut is to allow the use of data without giving permission every time.

What can you do?

  • Change the Siri prompt for the Shortcut to something that cannot be read easily. For Example, turn Siri, read mode to Siri, rdmd.
  • Change the name of the original Shortcut too.
  • Make a new Shortcut. Make it run the renamed version of the original Shortcut.

#13 Carplay Not Working with Music Apps

It’s safe to say the only time we listen to music on our iPad or iPhone is when we’re in the car. Imagine the surprise of iPad users when they couldn’t connect their car system to Spotify, Apple Music or Amazon after the update.

Now, it’s debatable whether it’s because of compatibility issues with your car or a genuine mishap on Apple’s part with the update. However, if it’s a problem on their end, they will release an update with fixes soon.

In the meantime, you can:

  • Head to Settings.
  • Find Music.
  • Tap on EQ in it.
  • Toggle it off.

If the problem persists, pull over somewhere and turn off the carplay. Restart your car and see if it works.

Update the carplay app.

If you use USB to connect to carplay, check it’s a compatible version. If you use wireless connection, check your Bluetooth and Wi-Fi is turned on.

As a last measure, check there isn’t a permission issue.

  • Open Settings.
  • Look for Screen Time.
  • Tap on Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  • Press on Allowed Apps.
  • Check the toggle for Carplay is on. If not, turn it on.

Final words

Getting the latest and greatest update for your iPad may seem like a great choice at first, but should you upgrade to the newly announced iPadOS 15? The new update brings a lot of features and the quickest way to gain access to those with a developer account.

Well, we’ll be taking a look at the advantages and disadvantages of upgrading to the latest version and how can you upgrade to it without any hassle. So let’s get started, shall we?

What do you need to know before updating?

It would be best to keep a few things in mind before updating to the latest gen OS. This will help you keep your iPad healthy and maintain the performance it first came with, and those things are:

BackupsBackups are an integral part of keeping your data safe through the updating process. It essentially gives you the power to revert back to the current iPad with all your data intact. This means that if you screw something up in the updating process, you can simply revert back to how your iPad already was instead of starting everything anew.

Compatibility – Compatibility is another significant factor before updating, as not all iPads on the market. The upcoming iPadOS 15 update is said to be compatible with iPad mini 4 and later, iPad Air 2 and later, iPad 5th generation and later, and all iPad Pro models. However, if you have any older devices, you’re out of luck as those won’t work with the new update.

Stability issues – As with every OS and developer release, expect to see stability issues, bugs, and app crashes as the OS is not in the stable build and will likely have problems with apps and other processes. So, if you need a perfectly functional device, we would recommend you to stay away from the Beta update.

Risks of updating – There is a slight chance that you may end up with a bricked iPad while you’re updating through an IPSW image, and it can make your device entirely not functional. So, if you can’t take that risk with a Beta update, stay away from the entire upgrading process.

Developer Program – Apple has a developer program, and it is the only way you can get the Beta update for iPadOS 15. Hence, you need to be in the developer program to get the update, and the subscription will cost you $99.

Note: If you don’t have a developer profile, you can sign up with the public beta programme linked here and wait for the public release of the beta update scheduled sometime in mid to late July of 2021.

So, now that you have decided on getting on with the update process, let’s take a look at what and how you should proceed further. Well, the first step is to create a backup so let’s look at how you can do so.

How can you make a backup?

Backups are essential for saving your data, and here are the four ways you can make a backup right on your Mac or on iCloud:

Note: You can’t use an iPadOS 15 backup on iPadOS 14 or lower.

1. Finder Backup

You can backup your iPad through Finder using the steps below:

  • Connect your iPad to your Mac and select your iPad in the Finder section as shown above in the image
  • Now, click on the “General” tab and choose “Back up all of the data on your iPad to this Mac.”
  • Select “Encrypt local backup” if you want your backup file to be encrypted
  • Finally, click on the “Back Up Now” button, and the backup will be created.

2. iTunes Backup

You can also use iTunes to create a backup of your iPad, and here’s how you can do so:

  • Connect your iPad, open up the iTunes app, and select the iPad button near the top left of the iTunes window
  • Click on “Summary” and then on the “Back up Now” button to start the backup, as shown above
  • You can also select the “Encrypt Local Backup” button to protect your backups
  • Let the backup be completed, and you will have a complete backup of your iPad.

3. iMazing Backup

iMazing is a third-party app that can help you create quick backups and manage your iPad, and here’s how you can quickly make an iPad backup:

  • Download and install iMazing Backup here and run it.
  • Now connect your iPad and let iMazing scan your device. After your device is visible on the main screen, select your iPad from the left sidebar and click on “Backup”.
  • This will take you to a new screen, and you have to click on the blue “Back Up” button to start the backup process.
  • Let the backup be completed, and you will have a complete local backup stored on your Mac. You can use this backup after you complete your upgrade to iPadOS 15 or if you want to downgrade to iPadOS 14.

4. iCloud Backup

The iCloud Backup is the most accessible backup on the list as it only requires you to have your iPad and a decent internet connection. Here’s how you can use iCloud to backup your device:

  • Go to the “Settings” app on your iPad
  • Now click on your profile and then on “iCloud”.
  • Finally, toggle the “iCloud Backup” button to on and click on the “Back Up Now” button.
  • This will start the backup process, and after it’s finished doing its thing, you can go to iCloud to see all your data present there.

Now that you’ve made a backup let’s get on to the process of upgrading your iPad. Here’s all the information required for upgrading your device.

How to upgrade to iPadOS 15?

Upgrading to iPadOS 15 is not rocket science and can be done in under 30 mins. However, you would need to follow the steps listed below correctly so that you don’t end up bricking your device.

Which version should you choose? (Developer vs Public)

This should be obvious to everyone, so if you’re a developer and have a developer account ready, then get the developer built from the link here. However, if you’re a regular Joe looking to get your iPad to the latest version, get the Public from the link here. Do note that having a developer profile with Apple isn’t easy, and it requires a $99 annual subscription fee. So, if you’re a casual user, we would recommend you go ahead and sign up with the public beta programme, as it is free and is a lot easier to access.

1. Install through OTA update

The OTA update method is the easiest and most convenient method of getting your iPad to the latest version.

  • Head on to the links above on your iPad and sign in with your profile
  • Now, download the beta profile for the respective betas and install it
  • Confirm the installation by going in the Settings app and then on the “General” section.
  • Scroll to the bottom and click on “Profiles”, and click on the iPadOS 15 profile and install it by clicking on the “Install” button on the top right of the screen.
  • Once installed correctly, this will enable you to download the latest public beta straight to your iPad from the “Update” section on your iPad.

2. Install through IPSW image file

The second method to get iPadOS 15 Beta on your iPad is through installing it with an IPSW image file. Now, getting hold of this requires you to have a developer account. However, if you don’t have it, you can wait for Apple to release the Public Beta image, or you can get it through someone already with a developer build. Anyways, after you have the image file, you need to run iMazing and follow the process below:

  • Run iMazing and connect your device. Now, select your iPad on the left sidebar and click on the Update iPadOS button.
  • Now, in the following screen, you will get an option to choose your iPadOS image file, and once you have selected it, select the “Back up” button as well and click on the blue “Update” button as shown in the screenshot above.
  • Finally, let the process be completed and if everything goes well, you will be greeted with an iPad with the latest iPadOS 15 Beta installed.

Note: You can also install the IPSW file through Finder by holding down the “alt” key and clicking on the “Update” button, and selecting the IPSW image file, but to our experience, iMazing was just faster and smoother.

Pros and Cons of Upgrading to iPadOS 15 Beta

Pros

  • Early access to all the new features
  • Best in class security updates
  • Performance improvements and a lot more

Cons

  • Bugs and App crashes
  • Instability issues

How to downgrade to iPadOS 14?

If you have upgraded your iPad and are struggling with some performance or stability issues from the Beta update, you still have a chance to revert it back to the stable build. Doing this would get you back to your previous iPadOS version and would make your device entirely stable to use. It will also fix all the issues with apps or any other processes you’re having trouble with. You can use the steps below to get your iPad to feel as it once was.

1. Use Finder to downgrade

Downgrading is much easier than upgrading your iPad, and you can do this through Finder by Restoring your iPad. This doesn’t mean that you’re going to restore a backup. It implies that Finder will download the latest stable iPadOS version and install it on your iPad. You can follow the process below to get your iPad downgraded:

  • Connect your iPad to your Mac and look for it in the sidebar to the left on Finder.
  • Select your iPad and then click on the “General” tab. Now, you need to click on the “Restore iPad” button and then on “Restore” on the pop-up. Let Finder restore the stable iPadOS version on your iPad. You can check the screenshot above for further clarity on the steps.
  • Let the process complete and turn on your iPad and complete the setup process to see that it has been downgraded to iPadOS 14.

2. Use iMazing to downgrade

The other method to downgrade your iPad is through iMazing, and this is as simple as clicking three buttons. You can follow the process below to get your iPad degraded with the help of iMazing:

  • Firstly, run iMazing and connect your iPad. Let the app scan your iPad, and then select it from the left sidebar. Now, click on the “Reinstall iPadOS” button to get to the next screen.
  • Once you’re on the same screen as the screenshot above, simply click on the “Download iPadOS 14.6 from Apple Servers and Install” button and click on the blue “Reinstall button” in the bottom right-hand corner.
  • Let the process complete and follow all the prompts on your iPad to see that it has recovered to the original condition with all your data intact.

Note: You can also restore all the backups you took before and get all your data and apps back as it was before the upgrade and downgrade process.

Bottom line

We hope that this guide will help you upgrade or downgrade to the latest and greatest iPadOS 15, and if you’ve followed the steps and advice properly, your mind should be at ease with the whole process, and your data should be safe. However, if the worst happens and you end up losing any data or have any other queries, here are tools for iPad data recovery. With that said, we end our guide and wish you an enjoyable beta testing experience.

Apple announced the 15th gen iPadOS, and it’s looking to bring in some of the most requested features to the iPad. In addition, the ability to customize your home screen and widgets is looking to compete with Android levels of freedom, and there’s a lot more that makes the new update a serious contender for the best iPadOS version to date.

We’ve got the developer beta ready and tested all the new features coming with the stable update. However, do note that some of this might change with future releases. So, let’s get started with making your home screen as customized and beautiful as ever.

iPadOS 15: home screen refresh with new widgets

iPadOS 15 brings a lot of changes and updates to features that were introduced in iPadOS 14. Some of the features are updates to older components, and some are entirely new that change the way you interact with your iPad home screen and other UI elements.

Newer Widgets – iPadOS 15 brings many new Widgets and an entirely new UI that helps you manage all the app widgets. There are five brand new widgets – App Store, Find My, Game Centre, Main and Contacts widgets that allow you to browse through the apps and perform different operations quickly. Most widgets are also interactable and will enable you to stack them with other same-sized widgets for quick access and a clutter-free experience.

Widget Stack – Widget Stack is a new introduction to the iPad OS widget system, and it allows you to club in similar sized widgets from various apps together, save a lot of space on the home screen and make it look a whole lot cleaner, and provide better functionality throughout the experience. For example, you can just drag and drop one widget on another, creating a stack. You can scroll up and down on the widget stack to access different widgets and edit the stack to show the primary widget with other secondary widgets.

App Library – Finally, App Library has been ported over from the iPhone to the iPad, and it makes your life a whole lot easier. You can change and edit your home screen pages and even entirely remove them. All your apps would be automatically adjusted in the App Library, and you can access it straight through your dock. App Library can also be accessed by swiping to the end of the home screen, and you can also disable the dock button in the settings for a cleaner dock interface.

Quick Notes – The bottom right section of the iPad now houses a new feature that changes how you note down stuff and add in a lot of information quickly. You can drag it in from the bottom right to bring in a quick note area that allows you to note and add pictures or to-do lists. The quick notes are a powerful feature-rich system and can also house images and notes straight from a website or an app, and oh, and it works perfectly with Apple Pencil.

Files and Folders – The widget system has a new file widget. It is much more powerful and allows you to place in multiple folder destinations or locations right to your home screen. It also has a powerful progress bar that helps track downloads and other transfers and can be a great way to minimize search time for data or different files. The widget is also interactive, so you can add in more or remove files straight through the home screen.

Interactive iPad Widgets – Most widgets are now interactive and present you with a variety of options. For example, you can use the clock widget to set alarms and timers while getting the weather or music widget to look at the weather condition or listen to music. This makes the widget system powerful and feature-rich and enables other third-party developers to add quick access functionality through their widgets.

How to add or remove widgets on an iPad?

Freely moving around the home screen and customizing it as you like was a feature that was greatly anticipated to come with the new update and Apple delivered. You can freely reposition apps and widgets on your iPad now, and you can follow the steps below to add or remove widgets on your device.

Adding Widgets to the Home Screen:

  • Hold on to any blank spot on your iPad Home screen.
  • Tap on ‘+’ at the top left of the screen.
  • Choose the widgets from a variety of sizes (Larger sizes are now available).
  • Now add it to the home screen and organize it according it to your preference.

Removing Widgets from the Home Screen:

  • Hold on to a widget and wait for a menu to pop up.
  • Click on the ‘x’ button to remove the widget.

How to customize your iPad home screen layout?

iPad home screen is not limited by anything now, and you can have a clean and clutter-free experience with just a small time investment. Firstly, you can start from the basics and adjust the icons and widgets according to your preferences. Secondly, you can change your dock and use App Library. Finally, you can use different apps to customize your icons and change shortcuts with ease.

Shortcuts help you make quick access shortcuts for different settings, apps and files and use it straight from the home screen, and if you have the magic keyboard, you can use the ‘Command’ button to access a variety of pre-built shortcuts and commands for your iPad. You can also customize the layout and choose which pages you want to keep or delete. This makes organizing a clean experience much more seamless and allows for some great minimal screen options.

The process for customizing your home screen layout:

  • Hold down on any app or an empty area until all the apps start to jiggle.
  • Now you can freely move your apps and widgets across screens.
  • You can also delete pages and make a primary home screen page.

Besides, here are two useful apps that make iPad home screen customization a piece of cake

1. Customize your icons and shortcuts – Iconboard

Iconboard is a fantastic app available for your iPad, and it helps you use custom icon packs for all your downloaded apps. You can even customize the app font or remove the names for an overall cleaner look. We use the two icon packs listed below to create a multi look home screen that looks amazing.

These two icon packs are very feature-rich and also have built-in support for shortcut customization, which helps you bring the look together and quickly have a unique personalized home screen for your device. We’ll also be looking at some layouts below that take full advantage of the brilliant icon packs.

2. Customize your Widgets – WidgetSmith

Widgets can also be customized now, and you can also make custom widgets for personal use. However, you would need an app, and WidgetSmith is the best app for the job. It delivers an excellent user experience and allows free editing for a lot of widgets.

We recommend you download the app and use its unique functionality to create personalized and unique widgets associated with your work and other similar quick access feature with the help of shortcuts and other apps to fit your design scheme. Follow the layout inspirations below to use WidgetSmith at its best.

Creative iPad home screen layouts inspiration

There are a lot of modern home screen layouts which will inspire you to make your personalized home screen layout a reality, and here are some examples.

Sukikano’s iPadOS 15 layout – Beginner Friendly Home Screen

This layout is a classic take on iPad home screen design and uses the upcoming reposition ability of iPadOS 15 to change and add widgets over the top section of the screen and add all the most used apps on the bottom.

The dock also houses some of the most used apps and the app library icon to manage all your apps on a secondary screen. Finally, he uses the files widget to access all the most used files quickly and folders and other informational widgets to round off the entire experience.

v-23’s Desktop Layout – Easy Folder Management

This modern layout takes full advantage of the new features and widgets that iPadOS 15 brings and uses the reposition ability to store all the folders and files on a single screen. It can contain your most-used apps on the dock, and the App Library icon and the home screen houses all the widgets.

The files widget helps you manage and quickly access all your files and folders, and the shortcuts widget manages all your shortcuts on a single page. Finally, the mail widget collects and shows all your inbox mails, and the weather widget displays the weather forecast for the week.

Protomize’s Developer Setup – Coders Rejoice

The Home Screen setup from Protomize brings a unique take on making a coder and media-friendly space. It has all the essential apps listed on the top and fills the rest of the screen with developer and media apps. It also houses a great organized folder collection that helps bring quick access to multiple similar apps.

The widget on the left features crucial battery information, and the weather widget helps you plan out your day with the knowledge of the surrounding conditions. Finally, the dock houses some essential apps such as Safari and Messages, and it also features quick access to multiple social media apps.

Zack-Shurin’s Widget Setup – Information at Your Fingertips

Zack’s Home Screen Setup relies on a lot of widgets and folders to work the best. He uses it to bring light to multiple quick access widgets to help you stay organized and perform better. In addition, he uses a launcher widget for all his apps and folders to keep rarely used apps organized.

All the widgets range from productivity and data analysis, and it helps him through clean weather, location, and mail widgets. In addition, he also has a crypto widget to help get data on pricing and a quick access note widget.

Lmtlrt’s Monochrome Home Screen Layout – Designer Friendly Approach

This Monochrome setup helps bring a new and unique take on iPad Home Screens. It features dark backgrounds and dark icons that blend well with the entire home screen setup. The dock also uses black icons, and the widgets on the left follow the dark mode approach.

The contrast is impressive, and setting up something like this will take you a lot of time and work. However, apps such as Iconboard and Widget Smith will help you get the desired look and make changes to personalize it.

Marktheperson’s Clean Setup –  Beautiful Aesthetic Layout

This light and colourful approach to home screens is the complete opposite of what we looked at earlier, and the overall aesthetic makes it look like a friendly and intuitive home screen to work with. The background wallpaper contrasts nicely with the app’s icons, and the overall aesthetic blends well with users who want a productivity-centric primarily.

To make something similar to this would require you to have a clean and light wallpaper and an icon set that compliments the background with a playful approach to the home screen. The widget on the left also helps provide you with weather data, and the folders help you manage all your apps on a single page.

Christopher Lawley’s No Compromise Layout – Space Management at its Finest

Christopher has a lovely iPad home screen setup that uses custom icons with the help of Iconboard and widgets from Widget Smith. He also utilizes all the space available on the iPad home screen and adds in apps and shortcuts throughout the screen and the dock.

The widgets are also custom and provide a lot of information from the weather to the battery levels of all his connected devices, and the vast array of apps are all that he uses daily. He uses a black background as the wallpaper to make the icon pop more, and the titles are also removed for an overall cleaner aesthetic. You can follow the video linked above to get more insight into the process of setting up the home screen.

It’s now clear iPadOS 15 widgets bring big changes to the iPad

The new iPad OS update brings in many new features, and it is also promising to be a better OS with a stable release. However, with that said, if you’re a person that likes to edit their home screen for better personalization and personality and updating to the new upcoming version is looking to bring big changes to the iPad ecosystem.
