Data is the most crucial part of our life. It is a special collection of us and everything we do. From our social accounts to contacts, emails, media collection, and much more, it hosts most of what our life is.

Besides, our device also contains our work-related data, bank details, and much more, which will cause harm if lost. Apple and many other companies have realized this problem and hence developed ways to prepare a backup of our data to recover it in case of loss.

But why do we need backups? Like we use our phone, and it’s all fine. Now, say you are using your iPad, and it falls and breaks; the repair will most probably delete all your data. Also, if your iPad gets stolen, the possibilities are that your data will stay secure thanks to Apple’s first-grade security, but you won’t be able to access it if you don’t have a backup. Moreover, if you are switching to a new iPad, you will need a backup to get the old data in the new one.

To help you in this task, here is a detailed solution on how you can quickly backup your data in various ways.

Quick jump to:

Back-up iPad with iCloud

iCloud is a classic cloud service developed and maintained by Apple. It was created to sync and back up data from one device and then restore it to the required device.

The backup process is simple since it always runs in the background and keeps syncing data with the cloud server. Apple iCloud is connected with your Apple ID, and it keeps uploading the selected data without hampering the task at hand.

How to back up data on iPad using iCloud

Mostly, iCloud backups are on by default. But no worries, we will also deal with turning it on manually. You can also choose files and folders you want to back up, which saves a lot on cloud space.

The steps back to up are:

  1. Open Settings on your iPad.
  2. Click on your Apple Account ID; this will show many options on the left screen.
  3. Tap on the iCloud option.
  4. For the apps you want to add to the backup, use the Toggle switch and turn them on.
  5. Tap on the iCloud Backup option and turn on the toggle switch next.
  6. Now tap on the Back Up Now option to backup the data to the cloud.

With this, the backup is completed. You can also edit the iCloud settings according to your requirements anytime you want.

What to do if you have run of your iCloud storage

Ever faced pop-ups like “This iPad cannot be backed up because there is not enough iCloud storage.” or notifications like “The last backup could not be completed because of storage limit.” This happens because you have because you have exhausted your iCloud space.

These issues are very common, given that iCloud offers only 5GB of free space. If you are seeing the error message then you will want to double-check how much storage you have left.

  1. Open Settings on your iPad and go to your account info.
  2. Click on the iCloud option. Now you will see the amount of free space in your iCloud.
  3. Tapping on the Manage Storage option will give you an advanced overview of the occupied space.

You can free your space by deleting files that are no longer critical, or might need to consider purchasing extra storage space.

  • Stopping Irrelevant Backups

Photos and videos usually take a large part in backups, so you need to disable Photos backup to free up space. To do this go to Settings -> Profile -> iCloud -> Photos and disable iCloud Photos. Besides, you can also toggle off irrelevant apps and files backup and choose only the necessary ones.

  • Buying Extra Storage

You can always consider buying extra cloud storage when you are out of storage. iCloud offers extra storage plans priced at: @0.99/month for 50GB, $2.99/month for 200GB, and $9.99/month for 2TB extra space.

Back-up iPad with Finder

The Finder app is like the new iTunes for macOS Catalina and more recent versions. iTunes was split into several apps, and its features for music, files, and podcasts got separated, so now Finder is used to managing backups. However, you can still use iTunes in Windows and macOS Mojave or older versions.

How you can use Finder to prepare backups of your iPad

  1. Connect your iPad to your PC via USB cable.
  2. Open the Finder app on your macOS’ from the dock options.
  3. Go to Location -> iPad from the sidebar.
  4. Go to the General tab and select the Backups section.
  5. Check the box that reads, “Back up all of the data on your iPad to this Mac.”
  6. Click on the Back Up Now button to start the process.

Note: If you wanted to encrypt your iPad backup, you can check the box labeled Encrypt [device] backup. You’ll then be prompted to create a password specifically for that backup.

Should I encrypt my iPad backups?

Backups always contain the data you have on your device, in this case, your iPad, and to keep it safe, you should always consider encrypting your backup; by this, you make sure that only you can access the backup file.

Moreover, enabling the encrypting option lets you backup Keychains, call history, and browsing history. Simply said, you should always encrypt your backups. However, it is very important that you remember your keycode/passcode to decrypt the backup else, you will lose it forever. Keep this in mind.

Back-up iPad to Mac/PC/External Drive/NAS with 3rd-party tools

iCloud and Finder offer backup facilities, but they are not so straightforward with the options provided and don’t provide features that you might love to have with data backups. All this provokes the use of 3rd-party transfer and backup apps like iMazing, Dr. Fone, EaseUs MobiMover, etc.

How to back up data on iPad using iMazing

Out of all the other 3rd-party software, iMazing is the best overall for backing up iPad data. Moreover, it is not limited to just that; its features will blow your mind, and it is straightforward to use. Let’s see the steps to do so:

  1. First, Download and install iMazing on your macOS or Windows PC.
  2. Connect your iPad to your computer via USB cable and launch the iMazing app.
  3. You will need to give “Trust” permission on your iPad screen for the first time.
  4. iMazing asks you to create a backup right away, which you can do by clicking on the Back Up Now option or choosing the “Later” option for another time.
  5. Click on Back Up Now, and you will see the detailed backup options.
  6. Here, you can choose the apps, files, or other data you want to backup or select all the options for a complete backup.
  7. After making the selections, press the Back Up button.
  8. Please wait for the process to complete; once it’s finished, click on Done, and that’s it. Now you can disconnect your device.

Note: Make sure your device stays connected throughout the completion of the process. Disconnecting in between will either cancel the operation or corrupt the backup file.

Where to find your iPad backups, and how to move them onto external storage?

Sometimes you might feel the need to transfer your backups to external storage, and you can do this only by knowing the default settings of iMazing. iMazing, by default, saves backups at the following location:

On a Mac: /users/YOUR_USER_NAME/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup

On a Windows PC: C:\users\YOUR_USER_NAME\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

However, you can always change the backup folder to your required folder, knowing where to find it.

To move this backup to external storage, you simply need to cut/copy (depending on your choice) and paste it into your connected external storage. No worries, we will get into the stepwise details:

  1. Connect your external storage to your PC.
  2. Open the folder where the backups are saved.
  3. Right-click on the backup file and click on Copy (Cmd/Ctrl – C) or Cut (Cmd/Ctrl – X).
  4. Open your external storage volume, Right-Click -> Paste or Cmd/Ctrl – V

Now you have successfully moved your backup file to your external storage.

What does not get backed in iCloud, Finder, and iMazing

iCloud

Though iCloud manages to back up most of the data and settings, it is limited when it comes to specific options. Those options are:

  • Apple Mail data
  • Apple Pay data and settings
  • Lock screen settings such as Face and Touch ID
  • Data that already have a previous backup in iCloud, like Contacts, Calendars, Notes, and Photo libraries.
  • Music Library and the App store settings and details.
  • Data is stored in other cloud services, like Google Drive.
Finder

Finder is a very advanced replacement for iTunes. If we talk about backups, it has made the process easy and fast. However, there are things that Finder does not back up:

  • Apple Mail data
  • Apple Pay data and settings
  • Lock screen settings such as Face and Touch ID
  • Data stored in iCloud, like Photos, Messages, etc.
  • iTunes and other Apple Music apps, like imported audios, videos, images, and books.
  • App store data and content.
iMazing

iMazing is a tremendous 3rd-party tool used to back up iOS devices, and it also helps in transferring data from one device to another. iMazing backs up most of the files; however, some files that it can’t are:

  • Apple Pay data and settings
  • Lock screen settings such as Face ID and Touch ID
  • Data stored in another cloud storage

The pros and cons of each solution

Now that we know how to perform backups using iCloud, Finder, and iMazing, let’s look at each of the pros and cons.

iCloud pros
  • Easier to use since it only requires your iPad
  • Saved on a cloud server, so accessible from anywhere using the internet
  • Easily manage your storage space and cloud space
  • Automatic backup options are available
  • Real-Time syncing to other devices with the same Apple ID
  • Good for backing up documents, notes, and small files
iCloud cons
  • Not much storage space is available. Extra space needs to be bought depending on the backup size
  • Restoring takes time, not as fast as the other options
  • Depends on the internet connection, so backup can even fail if the internet is not working
  • In case of multiple backups, the old backup data is deleted
  • The data that can be backed up is limited. It doesn’t include other cloud services, Music Library, and App Store in the backup.
Finder pros
  • Fast backup completion
  • Fast restoring time
  • Allows the backup of data stored on other cloud services
  • No storage space issue
  • Allows encrypted backups to backup Health data, Wi-Fi details, call history, and website history
  • Since the backup is stored on the macOS hard drive, it is backed up again by Time Machine. So multiple backups are prepared
Finder cons
  • Does not back up files saved in iCloud
  • Does not backup imported audio and video files
  • Overwrites the existing backups
  • Needs USB connection to backup for devices using iOS 5 or below
  • Not much control over backup files being created
iMazing pros
  • Works on both Windows and macOS
  • No Operating system version restrictions
  • Allows automatic backups over Wi-Fi
  • Allows backup encryption for an added layer of security
  • It can be used as an iPad Manager
  • Easy data migration and fast restore functions
  • Full control over backup options
  • No storage space problems; it depends on your external drive
  • Enables the backup of browsing history, call history, and books.
iMazing cons
  • It is a paid software, but still, a great deal considering the features offered.

Final thoughts

There could be many reasons behind backing up iPad data; it could just be to keep your data safe in case of theft or damage or to transfer it to a new device. No matter the reason, the mentioned backup ways will always be helpful.

Your choice of backup type depends on your priority and reason for the backup. Though you are free to choose any way you like, please go through our preferred choice details once to understand which one will be the best option

iCloud – convenient but far from perfect

iCloud is easy to use since you only need to work on your iPad, and with a few taps, you can sync your data. But it is very trapped in backup options and does not allow backing up of many important files. Moreover, the restoring time is slow. The maximum backup you can make for free is 5GB; you will need to pay after that. All this makes iCloud quite laughable, given it was made for this purpose.

Finder – dependable but restrictive

Finder does not provide you the control to choose the files you want to backup, which means that all the available files are backed up together. However, its feature of saving data on the hard drive is appreciative but still doesn’t overrule the fact of limitations on choosing files. Also, it deletes the old backup data when a new backup is made.

iMazing – easy yet powerful

iMazing is the best option you can choose to get out of the limitation of Finder and iCloud. Ironical to its features, it has a simple UI that anyone can easily use. iMazing offers a lot of backup options, and also provides automated backup. It offers rock-solid encryption to keep your data safe. Moreover, it doesn’t delete older backups; instead, it creates a record with the date and time. You also get advanced controls like the ability to save and export Messages. Though it is paid, the features it offers besides data backup are incredibly useful in many scenarios, which makes it a great deal.

We or any other iOS device user would surely advise you to grab this deal and get rid of the other options or end up paying your entire life for iCloud storage.

iPad is a great device; with the latest M1 processor, the device is on another level. It is significantly better and functional than previous generations. iPad is bigger and better than iPhone; it has many great features and an exceptional Apple camera setup.

It is a productive device and allows the user to do a lot of office work and graphic designing. Moreover, Apple devices have the best mobile phone camera. It is a cheap point-and-shoot option for many photographers.

Office data, pictures, and videos are pretty important. The essential office documents and sheets are crucial, and backing them up on your computer is the best way to preserve them. Moreover, computers have better software to edit pictures and videos.

You can transfer some photos and documents through email, but it is not a feasible option for a large amount of data.

Commonly iTunes is used to back up the data on PC and Mac. It can backup most local data, but Touch ID and Apple Pay information are not backed up. Moreover, you cannot preview the items before and after backing up due to some strict Apple rules and regulations. iTunes also lacks some essential features, and you can only backup the iPad in Apple way, not in your way.

So, there are better 3rd party software and cloud services that can easily backup the iPad to a computer without iTunes.

How to backup iPad to computer (Mac/PC) without iTunes?

There are a lot of ways you can use to backup your iPad to a computer without using iTunes. Some require you to connect your iPad to the computer with a cable, and others do it wirelessly. Here are the methods you can use to backup your iPad without iTunes:

Backup using iCloud – You can use the backup function on your iPad to backup the data and then log in with your iCloud account on your computer to download the backup files.

Backup using iMazing – Using a third-party app can be the perfect alternative to iTunes. One such app is iMazing, and it is perfect for backup all your iPad’s data within minutes. Scroll below to learn more about how to use iMazing to backup your iPad.

A stylish way: back-up to computer with 3rd-party iPad manager like iMazing

  • Now a dialogue box will appear; specify the folder where you want to keep the data and click Choose.

The click will start the transfer, and you will have all the iPad’s data on your computer in no time.

A classic way: back up to iCloud

iCloud is an excellent option for iPad users. It is effortless to use, and you can back up everything on the iCloud, from photos to documents to iOS settings. Moreover, if your Mac is logged in with a similar iCloud account, you can view and download the data on your computer.

Is your iPad running slower than how it used to when you bought it, all brand spanking new? Well, maybe we can help you with that. We have made you a guide on how to get your iPad running the same as it did when you first booted it up (now that’s an exaggeration).

There are many reasons why your iPad is running slow. This guide will specifically focus on the software side of things. If you doubt that the problem might be internal then it is best to take your iPad to a repair store as they will have tools to analyze the problem better. Now that we got that out of the way, here’s the first thing you have to do.

Why is my iPad slow?

The reason Apple brings out a brand-new iPad and iPhone every year is not just reap huge profits, but due to the growing demand of users for devices which are more powerful than the previous generation. The fact that the iPad Pro 2021 hosts the same M1 chipset that the latest line of MacBooks possess, gives you an idea how demanding some of the modern apps and web services can be.

The process-heavy apps and services can take a toll on the hardware of the iPad, occupying the RAM storage, and the available on-board memory too. However, there are some tried and tested ways that you can bring the iPad up to speed and enjoy the same experience you once did.

1. Slow loading and apps crashing – Reset your iPad

If the software on your iPad is being finicky, or apps aren’t working properly, you might think that it’s your iPad that’s lagging. Well, it is, but it doesn’t classify as a major issue that can be easily fixed with something as simple as a reset.  There are two kinds of resets, A soft reset, and a hard reset.

Performing a soft reset

  1. Press and hold the Sleep / Wake button (on the top right of your iPad). You will see a red arrow slider appear.
  2. Tap on the slider and drag it to the right.
  3. Your iPad will turn off.
  4. After a few minutes, press the Sleep / Wake button again. Your iPad will turn back on.

The Apple logo will appear for a while and then your iPad’s home screen will appear.

Performing a hard reset

  1. Press and hold both the Sleep / Wake button and the home button simultaneously for 10-15 seconds.
  2. You will see a red arrow slider appear.
  3. Keep holding the Sleep / Wake and the home button.
  4. The Apple logo will appear.
  5. Release the buttons and your iPad will do a hard reset. It will shut down and restart.
  6. After a while, the home screen will appear.

2. Not on the latest iPadOS? Update the Software

Irrespective of which iPad you have, a software update is very crucial to the longevity of your device. Let’s go through the process of how to update your device to the latest iPadOS, but there are a few things to consider before you update to the latest version.

Before updating you should enable automatic back-up in your device, or back up your data manually.

Remember to back up first!

When it comes to keeping your personal pictures, videos, contacts, and crucial work document safe, you need to make sure everything is securely backed up first. On the Apple iPad, you have the option to keep all of your important files secure by the minute by syncing it to iCloud, or physically back up files to Mac or Windows.

We have extensively covered the process of backing up your iPad, whether it is for a routine factory reset, or any other issue.

Finally – update to thelatest iPadOS

Updating iPad automatically

  1. Navigate to Settings – General – Software Updates – Automatic Updates.
  2. Turn on Download iPadOS Updates and install iPadOS Updates

(When an update is available, your iPad will download and install it overnight while charging. You’ll be notified before the update is installed.)

Updating iPad manually

Go to Settings – General – Software Update.

The screen will show the currently installed version of iPadOS and whether an update is available.

Updating iPad using a computer

  1. Connect your iPad to your computer with a cable.
  2. You have two ways of going about doing this
  3.  In the Finder sidebar on your Mac, select your iPad, then click General at the top of the window.
  4. In the iTunes app on your Windows PC, Click the iPad button near the top left of the iTunes window, then click Summary.
  5. Click on Check For Update.
  6. To install an available update, click Update.

3. Too many junk files – clear cache

Clearing cache is the quickest way to make your iPad way snappier. Cache is basically the data that an app or browser stores in your device for quick access, to make its loading time and processing faster, but this also negatively impacts your iPads general performance.

Slow web browsing? Clear cache in Safari

Clearing up the cache in Safari will not only make your iPad browsing experience smoother but will also get rid of unnecessary storage held up by the app.

(Clearing Safari Cache does not delete your browser information or any saved passwords of any kind. There is also no risk of any of your important data getting wiped in the process.)

  1. Navigate to the Settings menu and navigate to the accounts and passwords section.
  2. Tap on the Safari icon.
  3. Tap on the “Clear History and Website Data” setting.
  4. A dialog box will pop up, tap “Clear history and data” to confirm the selection.
  5. All the safari cache that’s been stored in your iPad will be deleted from your device.

There is a way to still keep your browsing history but delete the cookies-

[Cookies are small pieces of information that all websites store on your iPad. They only store a few bits of text, but over time depending on the number of websites you’ve visited, these cookies add up.]

  1. Navigate to the Settings – Safari.
  2. Go to the Advanced tab – Website data.
  3. Tap to remove all the website data.
  4. This way you rid your iPad of the cookies without even touching your browsing history.

Remove useless app data – Clear cache in apps

If you’re someone who has a number of apps installed on your iPad, you’ll probably also have a lot of cache stored on your device, from those before-mentioned apps. Now the process to reset data or to delete the cache is different. Most of the time, the developer will implement the means to do so in the setting. But for some apps, the feature isn’t available. We will have a workaround for those too.

For apps with the setting in-built.

  1. Navigate to Settings – General.
  2. Tap on iPad storage. (Here you’ll see all the apps on your iPad arranged according to the storage they occupy.)
  3. Tap on the apps that are occupying the most space, or apps that shouldn’t occupy that much space that they already are.
  4. Navigate to Reset Cached Content, and tap it.

For apps with the setting, not built-in.

  1. Navigate to Setting – General.
  2. Tap on iPad storage.
  3. Tap on the apps that are occupying the most space or you know that can’t have its data and cache reset.
  4. Tap on document and data.
  5. Tap on the delete app button to clear its data.

It is understandable that the task of cleaning cache can be cumbersome for most of you and to continue doing it indefinitely until your iPad breaks is a hectic task to take on.

In this case, you can use a cache cleaner app to do the job for you. Be mindful while choosing which one though, as there is an influx of apps that claim to do it but are not fully capable. Try choosing one with a good rating or even better, a subscription. These will guarantee good performance and also increase the lifespan of your iPad.

4. Low on storage – Delete unnecessary apps

It is common knowledge that if your iPad’s storage is filled, it will start acting strange. It’ll become slow, laggy and in general, would not give a good experience. This is why it is necessary to clean up your iPad’s storage once in a while. To get rid of all the apps that you don’t use anymore and even the ones that now have better alternatives (looking at you WhatsApp).

If you already have made the decision on which apps you’re going to uninstall then this process has become a lot shorter for you. But if you need some more information to form a better judgment on which apps to remove, then the process will be a bit different for you.

The Easier way

  1. Go to your home screen and press and hold on the app’s icon which you want to delete, and a menu will pop up.
  2. Tap on Delete App.
  3. A dialog box will appear asking you to confirm, so go ahead and press Delete.
  4. The app will be deleted from your iPad.

The More Informed Way

  1. Navigate to Settings – General.
  2. Tap on iPad Storage. You will be presented with a list of all the apps installed on your devices. The apps will have the amount of storage they occupy stated beside them.
  3. Tap on the app you want to uninstall.
  4. Tap on the Delete App.

The app will be deleted from your iPad.

5. Multitasking too slow? Turn off background app refresh

This feature was introduced way back in the prehistoric times of iOS 7. It basically refreshes an app keeping the feed fresh right before you use them. For some apps this can come really handy, updating your feed giving you the latest info. This feature, even though it is convenient, but you probably don’t need it for every single app on your iPad.

Apps like your daily news, stocks, these you want to keep updated at all times. But apps like your Smart Home Switch, Or Netflix, Amazon, these are not required as much frequently. Background App Refresh is also a huge culprit in eating up your battery life and clogging the performance of your iPad. Why is it a good idea to manage and regulate its behavior?

You can choose to either completely turn off Background App Refresh for your iPad (this is only for the earlier generation iPads with less than sub-optimal performance and battery life) or individually turn it off for whichever app necessary.

Completely Turn Off Background App Refresh

  1. Navigate to Setting – General.
  2. Tap on Background App Refresh.
  3. At the top right, turn the toggle to Off.

Turn Off Background App Refresh for Individual Apps

  1. Navigate to Settings – General.
  2. Tap on Background App Refresh.
  3. You will see a list of all the apps installed on your iPad. Scroll through the list and toggle off the features for which app you deem it unnecessary.

The functionality of some apps might be affected due to this, mainly Facebook because they use the background refresh protocol to “spy on you”. But if you’re a regular user you’ll not do anything different. Other than the fact that you would seem to last longer and apps are opening faster.

6. Use iMyFone Umate – All in one iPad cleaner and optimizer

Developed as a free and premium app made specially to help users clear out the junk from their iOS and iPadOS devices, iMyFone Umate makes easy work of speeding up a slow iPad. Although it uses the built-in features of iOS itself to optimize the system, the simplified user interface and one-click operation is what mainstream users will appreciate, especially those who aren’t tech-savvy.

  1. Download the iMyFone Umate app from the official link.
  2. Run the Umate app and connect your iPad to the computer using a USB cable.
  3. You will be able to see the general storage information, including the used and free storage space.
  4. Start off by using the 1-Click Free Up Space option, which will automatically scan your iPad.
  5. In a few moments, you will be able to view the Photo Cache, Downloaded Temp Files, Crash Logs, and other junk files that can be deleted.
  6. Hit the Clean button and let the app complete the process of cleaning out the files.

Moreover, the iMyFone Umate app lets you Backup & Compress or Export & Delete the Photos stored on your iPad, along with the ability to delete Apps, and even Erase All Data at once. There is even the option to just Erase Private Data if you don’t want to factory reset the iPad, but still get rid of your personal files and media.

A few more things to keep in mind.

  • Do not update your iPad with a beta version of iOS, (unless you know what you’re doing.) These versions are used for testing and have a lot of bugs in them. They are also usually not that optimized, your battery life and performance will take a hit.
  • If you’re not aware of the risks and use a relatively old generation of iPad, stick to the official releases.
  • Do not remove apps from Recents right after using them. This seems a logical thing to do, why keep an app running if I’m not using it, right? Well, that would be the case with an app that you use, say once a week or so. But for fairly regular use, if you’re constantly removing and adding the app onto your RAM, your iPad won’t be able to optimize its usage and this will lead to that app performing less efficiently. Anyways if you don’t use an app, the software is smart enough to shut it down by itself.

Conclusion

If you’ve done everything mentioned above and your iPad still feels like it’s from 2012, it probably is. The newer iPads come with a better, more efficient, and more powerful chip in them. So, if you are one of those people who are still using a 4-generation old iPad, maybe this Christmas is the time to get a new one. And, you can always exchange your old iPad for the newer ones, and that too for a hefty discount.

Have you ever tried backing up your iPhone or iPad and felt that it wasn’t working as intended. Is the complete backup a slow process, and you don’t have the time. Well, don’t worry, we have been there too, and trust us, it can be frustrating and irritating to back up all your data. But doing so will help you secure all your files and ensure that you would have your backup to rely upon if anything ever goes wrong.

So, go ahead start the backup process, and we will try to make it a fast and easy process. This can be achieved with the help of some tips and tricks. These tips may include some third-party apps or a simple deleting old data section. So go through everything to get a decent understanding of how a backup works and how it can be improved.

How does a backup work?

A backup is simply copying all your data and cloning it onto an external drive or PC. It helps you ensure that your data is backed up and safe and can easily be stored on a separate disk. This means that if you ever run into any trouble and accidentally deleted some data or lost your iPad, you could quickly replace it and restore the backup making it the same as before.

Note: The complete backup process can take a long time completing depending on the amount of data you have on your iPad.

How can you backup files through iTunes or iCloud?

Backing up your device is a straightforward process and can be done either straight through your iPad or by connecting it to a desktop. Two methods can be utilized to backup your iPad, and here is the step-by-step guide on both processes.

The iTunes Method

  1. Run iTunes on your PC or Mac.
  2. Now, connect your iPad to the computer using the USB cable.
  3. If this is your first time connecting your iPad to your PC, it will show you a message asking if you trust this computer. Select “Trust” and allow the desktop to access all the information present on your iPad.
  4. Now, tap the iPad device icon present in the upper left corner of the iTunes window.
  5. Finally, go to the “Backup” section and click on “This Computer”, and finally select the “Back Up Now” button to begin the backup process.

The iCloud Method

  1. Unlock your iPad and open the Settings application.
  2. Now, tap on your name at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap on iCloud and then on “iCloud Backup”.
  4. Finally, turn on the “iCloud Backup” option.
  5. Now, close the “Settings” application, and now your iPad will backup all data to iCloud.

How can you make the backup process fast?

As we have seen, the process is very straightforward, but it could be slowed and can take a lot of your time depending on the size of the data that needs to be backed up. So, here are some pro level tips that can help you make the process quick and reliable:

1. Delete all old and unused apps that can take up a lot of app data space

This is a standard process to go through when you want to improve your backup speeds. If you don’t want some apps and have many unwanted app data, then delete them before backing up your phone. This will ensure that your iPad stays clean and organized and will also improve the backup rate.

2. Remove all unused media from your iPad

Suppose you think that removing all your unwanted apps would solve your backup problems. In that case, you’re mistaken, as unwanted media is another factor that can hinder your backup speeds, and hence, deleting all unused media is an excellent step at an easy backup.

3. Move your photos to your computer or an iCloud Photo Library

We all have a ton of images that we want to keep as memories, but this hoarding process can bring in many issues for your iPad. So, instead of storing all these data locally on your iPad, get it all synced and backed up to an iCloud Photos Library so when you start backing up all your important files, photos aren’t going to be a problem.

4. Create iTunes or iCloud backups at regular intervals

Apple has an incremental or differential backup process. This means that each time you go on and do a backup, only new data or files get added. Basically, the more frequently you backup your iPad, the faster all other backups will be. This will help you save a lot of time in the long run and be much more secure with newer data files.

5. Avoid all services such as sending crash reports to Apple with every sync

Sending crash reports to Apple is relatively common and can quickly increase the backup time as iTunes would first copy these reports and forward them before creating the entire backup file. However, you can prevent this by rejecting the optional selection on iTunes, such as “Sending Crash Reports”, which can help you save a lot of time.

6. Turn off all syncing processes on your iPad

Remember, performance is your friend, and having more of it will help you increase the backup speeds drastically. So turn off all syncing processes and remove all apps from memory before backing up your device to have a seamless experience.

7. Ensure you’re using the proper connection

If you’re backing up your iPad through a USB-C connection, ensure that it’s running at the max speeds. The latest iPad Pro lineup also has support for Thunderbolt, which provides a 40Gbps transfer speed. So, connect with the correct port and enjoy a fast backup process.

8. Use a third-party service

You can also use many different third-party tools and applications to back up your files faster than the regular iTunes backup. Some of these tools and services are iMazing or Dr.Fone. Both these applications worked great for us and provided a faster time backing up the data. It helped us save around an hour or so, which is significant considering we had a lot of data, to begin with.

Now, if you follow all the tips as indicated, you will be greeted with faster backup speeds that will ensure you a great and secure backup.

Some backup FAQs

Q: How long does it take to backup 100GB?

Data transfer speeds are slow as the port’s bandwidth mainly limits them. An estimate will probably show that your backup would complete at a reasonable time, but that isn’t always the case, and with 8Mbps of transfer speed, 100GB of data should probably take about 30 hours to backup, which is a lot.

Q: Can I use my PC or Mac while it is backing up my iPad?

Yes. You could easily use your computer while the backup process is going on as PCs are built to be used with multiple tasks and applications in mind. Hence, a backup process isn’t going to affect the performance a lot, and you can use it to do any other stuff in the meantime.

Q: Why won’t my iPad backup to the cloud?

There can be multiple reasons for this but if you want to troubleshoot it, try deleting your last iCloud backup or turning off iCloud Backup in the “Settings” panel. Then go back and turn on the iCloud Backup settings and try backing up your device again.
