Quick notes is a new addition to the iPad. It is a floating notepad to write down all notes and save links conveniently. Moreover, you can also add pictures and text from Safari in this editor. The app is quite remarkable; you can quickly access it with a finger flick from the bottom right corner.

Quick notes come pre-installed on new devices, and old users will get the app with the latest iPadOS 15 updates.

The new app has many glitches and errors, and sometimes the Quick Notes do not even work. IPad users face some common problems with the Quick Notes in iPadOS 15, and here they are:

  • After the update, users are unable to open the floating window by swiping up from the bottom right corner.
  • The gesture location is not correctly designated, like there is no fixed place to swipe up.
  • Flicking up on the home screen will open the Quick Notes on the interface instead of a floating window.
  • Quick Notes is not responsive to Apple Pencil. Dragging up or clicking does not open the quick notes.

These are the four common issues that users are facing. So here are some reliable solutions to fix Quick Notes not working in iPad OS 15 easily.

How to fix quick notes not working?

Close the Notes App

The first fix that you must try is closing the notes app opened in the background. Closing the running Notes app can solve the problem.

  • Open the Quick notes app.
  • Then open the app switcher and simply remove the notes app by swiping up.

The process does not ensure 100% success, but we have seen it working in some instances.

Restart iPad

Restarting the device is not a solution to every issue, but it can be fruitful in this situation. To fix the Quick Notes not working problem, reboot your iPad.

  • Hold the Power button until the Restart option comes on the screen.
  • Click on the Restart option, and the device will restart.

These minor errors or glitches often get resolved after a reboot. So, use this few-second trick to solve your Quick Notes errors in an effortless way.

Force Restart iPad

If the iPad does not show the restart option or not restarting, you can force restart your device. It is not a tricky solution, and you will not have to toggle through various settings. The process is quite simple, but it is different for old and new devices because the new iPads don’t have the classic home button.

  • On Old iPad models You will press and hold the Power and Home button together. Hold them for a few seconds and release them as soon as you see the Apple logo on the screen. The device will restart and will probably resolve the error.
  • New iPad Models do not have the Home button. So, we have to use a different process to Force Restart the device. It is straightforward but slightly twisted. Firstly, press and rapidly release the Volume Up button. Repeat the process with the Volume Down button immediately. Then press and hold the Power button until the device restarts.

Check for Updates

Sometimes the device does not have the latest iPadOS or app version. So, you might need to install the latest OS and app version.

  • For OS, head to the Settings and open the General tab.
  • There, you will see the Software Update option; click on it.
  • Clicking it will reveal the latest OS version; if you don’t have the latest one, update the device to its latest version to fix the problem.

There is a chance that the notes app is not up to date. To check,

  • Visit the App Store, search Notes, and check for updates.
  • If available, then install the update, and hopefully, it will resolve the issue.

Disable Quick Notes on iPad

After updating the app, OS, and using all the possible solutions, you need to disable the Quick Notes on your iPad if the issue is still there. Doing that is not complicated; follow these simple steps.

  • Firstly, open the Settings app and scroll down to the Apple Pencil option.
  • Open the Apple Pencil and click on the drop-down menu on the top right corner of the screen. Swiping up will show the Pencil Gesture option.
  • In Pencil Gesture, you will see the Quick Notes option and disable it.

Getting the latest and greatest update for your iPad may seem like a great choice at first, but should you upgrade to the newly announced iPadOS 15? The new update brings a lot of features and the quickest way to gain access to those with a developer account.

Well, we’ll be taking a look at the advantages and disadvantages of upgrading to the latest version and how can you upgrade to it without any hassle. So let’s get started, shall we?

What do you need to know before updating?

It would be best to keep a few things in mind before updating to the latest gen OS. This will help you keep your iPad healthy and maintain the performance it first came with, and those things are:

BackupsBackups are an integral part of keeping your data safe through the updating process. It essentially gives you the power to revert back to the current iPad with all your data intact. This means that if you screw something up in the updating process, you can simply revert back to how your iPad already was instead of starting everything anew.

Compatibility – Compatibility is another significant factor before updating, as not all iPads on the market. The upcoming iPadOS 15 update is said to be compatible with iPad mini 4 and later, iPad Air 2 and later, iPad 5th generation and later, and all iPad Pro models. However, if you have any older devices, you’re out of luck as those won’t work with the new update.

Stability issues – As with every OS and developer release, expect to see stability issues, bugs, and app crashes as the OS is not in the stable build and will likely have problems with apps and other processes. So, if you need a perfectly functional device, we would recommend you to stay away from the Beta update.

Risks of updating – There is a slight chance that you may end up with a bricked iPad while you’re updating through an IPSW image, and it can make your device entirely not functional. So, if you can’t take that risk with a Beta update, stay away from the entire upgrading process.

Developer Program – Apple has a developer program, and it is the only way you can get the Beta update for iPadOS 15. Hence, you need to be in the developer program to get the update, and the subscription will cost you $99.

Note: If you don’t have a developer profile, you can sign up with the public beta programme linked here and wait for the public release of the beta update scheduled sometime in mid to late July of 2021.

So, now that you have decided on getting on with the update process, let’s take a look at what and how you should proceed further. Well, the first step is to create a backup so let’s look at how you can do so.

How can you make a backup?

Backups are essential for saving your data, and here are the four ways you can make a backup right on your Mac or on iCloud:

Note: You can’t use an iPadOS 15 backup on iPadOS 14 or lower.

1. Finder Backup

You can backup your iPad through Finder using the steps below:

  • Connect your iPad to your Mac and select your iPad in the Finder section as shown above in the image
  • Now, click on the “General” tab and choose “Back up all of the data on your iPad to this Mac.”
  • Select “Encrypt local backup” if you want your backup file to be encrypted
  • Finally, click on the “Back Up Now” button, and the backup will be created.

2. iTunes Backup

You can also use iTunes to create a backup of your iPad, and here’s how you can do so:

  • Connect your iPad, open up the iTunes app, and select the iPad button near the top left of the iTunes window
  • Click on “Summary” and then on the “Back up Now” button to start the backup, as shown above
  • You can also select the “Encrypt Local Backup” button to protect your backups
  • Let the backup be completed, and you will have a complete backup of your iPad.

3. iMazing Backup

iMazing is a third-party app that can help you create quick backups and manage your iPad, and here’s how you can quickly make an iPad backup:

  • Download and install iMazing Backup here and run it.
  • Now connect your iPad and let iMazing scan your device. After your device is visible on the main screen, select your iPad from the left sidebar and click on “Backup”.
  • This will take you to a new screen, and you have to click on the blue “Back Up” button to start the backup process.
  • Let the backup be completed, and you will have a complete local backup stored on your Mac. You can use this backup after you complete your upgrade to iPadOS 15 or if you want to downgrade to iPadOS 14.

4. iCloud Backup

The iCloud Backup is the most accessible backup on the list as it only requires you to have your iPad and a decent internet connection. Here’s how you can use iCloud to backup your device:

  • Go to the “Settings” app on your iPad
  • Now click on your profile and then on “iCloud”.
  • Finally, toggle the “iCloud Backup” button to on and click on the “Back Up Now” button.
  • This will start the backup process, and after it’s finished doing its thing, you can go to iCloud to see all your data present there.

Now that you’ve made a backup let’s get on to the process of upgrading your iPad. Here’s all the information required for upgrading your device.

How to upgrade to iPadOS 15?

Upgrading to iPadOS 15 is not rocket science and can be done in under 30 mins. However, you would need to follow the steps listed below correctly so that you don’t end up bricking your device.

Which version should you choose? (Developer vs Public)

This should be obvious to everyone, so if you’re a developer and have a developer account ready, then get the developer built from the link here. However, if you’re a regular Joe looking to get your iPad to the latest version, get the Public from the link here. Do note that having a developer profile with Apple isn’t easy, and it requires a $99 annual subscription fee. So, if you’re a casual user, we would recommend you go ahead and sign up with the public beta programme, as it is free and is a lot easier to access.

1. Install through OTA update

The OTA update method is the easiest and most convenient method of getting your iPad to the latest version.

  • Head on to the links above on your iPad and sign in with your profile
  • Now, download the beta profile for the respective betas and install it
  • Confirm the installation by going in the Settings app and then on the “General” section.
  • Scroll to the bottom and click on “Profiles”, and click on the iPadOS 15 profile and install it by clicking on the “Install” button on the top right of the screen.
  • Once installed correctly, this will enable you to download the latest public beta straight to your iPad from the “Update” section on your iPad.

2. Install through IPSW image file

The second method to get iPadOS 15 Beta on your iPad is through installing it with an IPSW image file. Now, getting hold of this requires you to have a developer account. However, if you don’t have it, you can wait for Apple to release the Public Beta image, or you can get it through someone already with a developer build. Anyways, after you have the image file, you need to run iMazing and follow the process below:

  • Run iMazing and connect your device. Now, select your iPad on the left sidebar and click on the Update iPadOS button.
  • Now, in the following screen, you will get an option to choose your iPadOS image file, and once you have selected it, select the “Back up” button as well and click on the blue “Update” button as shown in the screenshot above.
  • Finally, let the process be completed and if everything goes well, you will be greeted with an iPad with the latest iPadOS 15 Beta installed.

Note: You can also install the IPSW file through Finder by holding down the “alt” key and clicking on the “Update” button, and selecting the IPSW image file, but to our experience, iMazing was just faster and smoother.

Pros and Cons of Upgrading to iPadOS 15 Beta

Pros

  • Early access to all the new features
  • Best in class security updates
  • Performance improvements and a lot more

Cons

  • Bugs and App crashes
  • Instability issues

How to downgrade to iPadOS 14?

If you have upgraded your iPad and are struggling with some performance or stability issues from the Beta update, you still have a chance to revert it back to the stable build. Doing this would get you back to your previous iPadOS version and would make your device entirely stable to use. It will also fix all the issues with apps or any other processes you’re having trouble with. You can use the steps below to get your iPad to feel as it once was.

1. Use Finder to downgrade

Downgrading is much easier than upgrading your iPad, and you can do this through Finder by Restoring your iPad. This doesn’t mean that you’re going to restore a backup. It implies that Finder will download the latest stable iPadOS version and install it on your iPad. You can follow the process below to get your iPad downgraded:

  • Connect your iPad to your Mac and look for it in the sidebar to the left on Finder.
  • Select your iPad and then click on the “General” tab. Now, you need to click on the “Restore iPad” button and then on “Restore” on the pop-up. Let Finder restore the stable iPadOS version on your iPad. You can check the screenshot above for further clarity on the steps.
  • Let the process complete and turn on your iPad and complete the setup process to see that it has been downgraded to iPadOS 14.

2. Use iMazing to downgrade

The other method to downgrade your iPad is through iMazing, and this is as simple as clicking three buttons. You can follow the process below to get your iPad degraded with the help of iMazing:

  • Firstly, run iMazing and connect your iPad. Let the app scan your iPad, and then select it from the left sidebar. Now, click on the “Reinstall iPadOS” button to get to the next screen.
  • Once you’re on the same screen as the screenshot above, simply click on the “Download iPadOS 14.6 from Apple Servers and Install” button and click on the blue “Reinstall button” in the bottom right-hand corner.
  • Let the process complete and follow all the prompts on your iPad to see that it has recovered to the original condition with all your data intact.

Note: You can also restore all the backups you took before and get all your data and apps back as it was before the upgrade and downgrade process.

Bottom line

We hope that this guide will help you upgrade or downgrade to the latest and greatest iPadOS 15, and if you’ve followed the steps and advice properly, your mind should be at ease with the whole process, and your data should be safe. However, if the worst happens and you end up losing any data or have any other queries, here are tools for iPad data recovery. With that said, we end our guide and wish you an enjoyable beta testing experience.

Apple announced the 15th gen iPadOS, and it’s looking to bring in some of the most requested features to the iPad. In addition, the ability to customize your home screen and widgets is looking to compete with Android levels of freedom, and there’s a lot more that makes the new update a serious contender for the best iPadOS version to date.

We’ve got the developer beta ready and tested all the new features coming with the stable update. However, do note that some of this might change with future releases. So, let’s get started with making your home screen as customized and beautiful as ever.

iPadOS 15: home screen refresh with new widgets

iPadOS 15 brings a lot of changes and updates to features that were introduced in iPadOS 14. Some of the features are updates to older components, and some are entirely new that change the way you interact with your iPad home screen and other UI elements.

Newer Widgets – iPadOS 15 brings many new Widgets and an entirely new UI that helps you manage all the app widgets. There are five brand new widgets – App Store, Find My, Game Centre, Main and Contacts widgets that allow you to browse through the apps and perform different operations quickly. Most widgets are also interactable and will enable you to stack them with other same-sized widgets for quick access and a clutter-free experience.

Widget Stack – Widget Stack is a new introduction to the iPad OS widget system, and it allows you to club in similar sized widgets from various apps together, save a lot of space on the home screen and make it look a whole lot cleaner, and provide better functionality throughout the experience. For example, you can just drag and drop one widget on another, creating a stack. You can scroll up and down on the widget stack to access different widgets and edit the stack to show the primary widget with other secondary widgets.

App Library – Finally, App Library has been ported over from the iPhone to the iPad, and it makes your life a whole lot easier. You can change and edit your home screen pages and even entirely remove them. All your apps would be automatically adjusted in the App Library, and you can access it straight through your dock. App Library can also be accessed by swiping to the end of the home screen, and you can also disable the dock button in the settings for a cleaner dock interface.

Quick Notes – The bottom right section of the iPad now houses a new feature that changes how you note down stuff and add in a lot of information quickly. You can drag it in from the bottom right to bring in a quick note area that allows you to note and add pictures or to-do lists. The quick notes are a powerful feature-rich system and can also house images and notes straight from a website or an app, and oh, and it works perfectly with Apple Pencil.

Files and Folders – The widget system has a new file widget. It is much more powerful and allows you to place in multiple folder destinations or locations right to your home screen. It also has a powerful progress bar that helps track downloads and other transfers and can be a great way to minimize search time for data or different files. The widget is also interactive, so you can add in more or remove files straight through the home screen.

Interactive iPad Widgets – Most widgets are now interactive and present you with a variety of options. For example, you can use the clock widget to set alarms and timers while getting the weather or music widget to look at the weather condition or listen to music. This makes the widget system powerful and feature-rich and enables other third-party developers to add quick access functionality through their widgets.

How to add or remove widgets on an iPad?

Freely moving around the home screen and customizing it as you like was a feature that was greatly anticipated to come with the new update and Apple delivered. You can freely reposition apps and widgets on your iPad now, and you can follow the steps below to add or remove widgets on your device.

Adding Widgets to the Home Screen:

  • Hold on to any blank spot on your iPad Home screen.
  • Tap on ‘+’ at the top left of the screen.
  • Choose the widgets from a variety of sizes (Larger sizes are now available).
  • Now add it to the home screen and organize it according it to your preference.

Removing Widgets from the Home Screen:

  • Hold on to a widget and wait for a menu to pop up.
  • Click on the ‘x’ button to remove the widget.

How to customize your iPad home screen layout?

iPad home screen is not limited by anything now, and you can have a clean and clutter-free experience with just a small time investment. Firstly, you can start from the basics and adjust the icons and widgets according to your preferences. Secondly, you can change your dock and use App Library. Finally, you can use different apps to customize your icons and change shortcuts with ease.

Shortcuts help you make quick access shortcuts for different settings, apps and files and use it straight from the home screen, and if you have the magic keyboard, you can use the ‘Command’ button to access a variety of pre-built shortcuts and commands for your iPad. You can also customize the layout and choose which pages you want to keep or delete. This makes organizing a clean experience much more seamless and allows for some great minimal screen options.

The process for customizing your home screen layout:

  • Hold down on any app or an empty area until all the apps start to jiggle.
  • Now you can freely move your apps and widgets across screens.
  • You can also delete pages and make a primary home screen page.

Besides, here are two useful apps that make iPad home screen customization a piece of cake

1. Customize your icons and shortcuts – Iconboard

Iconboard is a fantastic app available for your iPad, and it helps you use custom icon packs for all your downloaded apps. You can even customize the app font or remove the names for an overall cleaner look. We use the two icon packs listed below to create a multi look home screen that looks amazing.

These two icon packs are very feature-rich and also have built-in support for shortcut customization, which helps you bring the look together and quickly have a unique personalized home screen for your device. We’ll also be looking at some layouts below that take full advantage of the brilliant icon packs.

2. Customize your Widgets – WidgetSmith

Widgets can also be customized now, and you can also make custom widgets for personal use. However, you would need an app, and WidgetSmith is the best app for the job. It delivers an excellent user experience and allows free editing for a lot of widgets.

We recommend you download the app and use its unique functionality to create personalized and unique widgets associated with your work and other similar quick access feature with the help of shortcuts and other apps to fit your design scheme. Follow the layout inspirations below to use WidgetSmith at its best.

Creative iPad home screen layouts inspiration

There are a lot of modern home screen layouts which will inspire you to make your personalized home screen layout a reality, and here are some examples.

Sukikano’s iPadOS 15 layout – Beginner Friendly Home Screen

This layout is a classic take on iPad home screen design and uses the upcoming reposition ability of iPadOS 15 to change and add widgets over the top section of the screen and add all the most used apps on the bottom.

The dock also houses some of the most used apps and the app library icon to manage all your apps on a secondary screen. Finally, he uses the files widget to access all the most used files quickly and folders and other informational widgets to round off the entire experience.

v-23’s Desktop Layout – Easy Folder Management

This modern layout takes full advantage of the new features and widgets that iPadOS 15 brings and uses the reposition ability to store all the folders and files on a single screen. It can contain your most-used apps on the dock, and the App Library icon and the home screen houses all the widgets.

The files widget helps you manage and quickly access all your files and folders, and the shortcuts widget manages all your shortcuts on a single page. Finally, the mail widget collects and shows all your inbox mails, and the weather widget displays the weather forecast for the week.

Protomize’s Developer Setup – Coders Rejoice

The Home Screen setup from Protomize brings a unique take on making a coder and media-friendly space. It has all the essential apps listed on the top and fills the rest of the screen with developer and media apps. It also houses a great organized folder collection that helps bring quick access to multiple similar apps.

The widget on the left features crucial battery information, and the weather widget helps you plan out your day with the knowledge of the surrounding conditions. Finally, the dock houses some essential apps such as Safari and Messages, and it also features quick access to multiple social media apps.

Zack-Shurin’s Widget Setup – Information at Your Fingertips

Zack’s Home Screen Setup relies on a lot of widgets and folders to work the best. He uses it to bring light to multiple quick access widgets to help you stay organized and perform better. In addition, he uses a launcher widget for all his apps and folders to keep rarely used apps organized.

All the widgets range from productivity and data analysis, and it helps him through clean weather, location, and mail widgets. In addition, he also has a crypto widget to help get data on pricing and a quick access note widget.

Lmtlrt’s Monochrome Home Screen Layout – Designer Friendly Approach

This Monochrome setup helps bring a new and unique take on iPad Home Screens. It features dark backgrounds and dark icons that blend well with the entire home screen setup. The dock also uses black icons, and the widgets on the left follow the dark mode approach.

The contrast is impressive, and setting up something like this will take you a lot of time and work. However, apps such as Iconboard and Widget Smith will help you get the desired look and make changes to personalize it.

Marktheperson’s Clean Setup –  Beautiful Aesthetic Layout

This light and colourful approach to home screens is the complete opposite of what we looked at earlier, and the overall aesthetic makes it look like a friendly and intuitive home screen to work with. The background wallpaper contrasts nicely with the app’s icons, and the overall aesthetic blends well with users who want a productivity-centric primarily.

To make something similar to this would require you to have a clean and light wallpaper and an icon set that compliments the background with a playful approach to the home screen. The widget on the left also helps provide you with weather data, and the folders help you manage all your apps on a single page.

Christopher Lawley’s No Compromise Layout – Space Management at its Finest

Christopher has a lovely iPad home screen setup that uses custom icons with the help of Iconboard and widgets from Widget Smith. He also utilizes all the space available on the iPad home screen and adds in apps and shortcuts throughout the screen and the dock.

The widgets are also custom and provide a lot of information from the weather to the battery levels of all his connected devices, and the vast array of apps are all that he uses daily. He uses a black background as the wallpaper to make the icon pop more, and the titles are also removed for an overall cleaner aesthetic. You can follow the video linked above to get more insight into the process of setting up the home screen.

It’s now clear iPadOS 15 widgets bring big changes to the iPad

The new iPad OS update brings in many new features, and it is also promising to be a better OS with a stable release. However, with that said, if you’re a person that likes to edit their home screen for better personalization and personality and updating to the new upcoming version is looking to bring big changes to the iPad ecosystem.

Changing and repositioning an app to add custom icons and widgets, iPadOS 15 is finally becoming functional and beautiful with the new chip and the even newer craze for the best app and widget home screen layout, which rounds off the entire iPad experience and delivers a seamless and unique interface built for you, by you. Taking a look at all the home screen setups, we’re sure that the iPadOS customization options are not bound by creativity. You can also make a brilliant setup for yourself by following the process or videos above for a better-inspired home screen layout that will help you improve productivity and manage all your apps without being cluttered.

The latest major update came out at WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) 2021, which brought about not just the latest operating systems for iPhone and iPad, but the macOS platform too.

Keeping the Apple M1 chipset in mind, which is at the heart of the iPad Pro 2021 series, Apple has quite a few surprises in store for users to try out with the latest version of the tablet operating system. It might be a while the general masses get to use and enjoy the best of features that iPadOS 15 has to offer, but that doesn’t mean you can’t already get an inside scoop on what to expect from it.

Will my iPad support iPadOS 15?

One particular feature we have come to love and adore about Apple is the extended support that it provides the iDevices on the software front. Every Apple iPad that received the iPadOS 14 update last year, is eligible for the iPadOS 15 update this year, and here’s the list:

  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th gen)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd gen)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th gen)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd gen)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd gen)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (1st gen)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd gen)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st gen)
  • iPad Pro 10.5-inch
  • iPad Pro 9.7-inch

  • iPad (7th gen)
  • iPad (6th gen)
  • iPad (5th gen)
  • iPad mini (5th gen)
  • iPad mini 4

What is the iPadOS 15 release date?

The final version of the iPadOS 15 is expected to come out later this year during the fall, with the iPadOS 15 beta version out right now. However, this particular beta version is directed towards developers and not a public beta, which is expected to make landfall by July. You can expect plenty of beta updates to roll out during the summer, giving plenty of time to developers for incorporating the best of iPadOS 15 into the new apps and games while the public beta users get an early taste of it all.

How do I get the iPadOS 15 update?

As we mentioned earlier, the iPadOS 15 is not yet available for the public beta, and is only open to you if you register with Apple as a developer looking to use the software to optimize your apps. To get the iPadOS 15 right now, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Register yourself as a developer and download your profile from the Apple Developer Center.
  2. After your developer profile is registered, you will be able to install the iPadOS 15 update over the air.
  3. Over the course of the next few months, you can expect plenty of updates released by Apple to resolve all the early bugs and issues that may arise with the early release update.

If you are interested in being one of the early iPadOS 15 users, don’t want to go through the cycle of buggy updates, and are willing to wait until July, we’d recommend waiting for the public beta release. To be an early bird with not too many bugs to hinder your experience, you can register for the public beta by signing up at beta.apple.com.

iPadOS 15 – some noteworthy features

Over the years, software updates for both, the iPhone and the iPad have become far more consolidated, which means you don’t get a completely revamped update each time around. However, concerning the iPad in particular, you get a slew of new tablet-centric features that are worth taking a closer look into.

Notes made smarter

To hold the pace with the Google Keep note-taking suite, Apple has overhauled the Notes app on iPadOS 15 for collaborative working. The inclusion of the Activity screen allows you to learn everything about the latest additions related to a specific project, along with the ability to add Hashtags to notes, which makes easier for you to filter things down the road. The brand-new Quick Notes tool of the app is available as a gesture, where you can swipe diagonally up from the bottom-right corner of the iPad screen to bring up a tiny notepad. Quick Notes offers different shortcuts based on the app you open it with, and everything you jot down is synced across the iOS, iPadOS, and macOS platforms.

Live Text translations

Introduced in the previous iPadOS 14 update, the Translate app is now equipped to make your multilingual conversations more fluent and easy. The Auto Translate feature detects the language you are speaking without even pressing the microphone button, making conversations more natural. Taking conversations with people who speak other languages to the next level, you can have a face-to-face conversation with an iPad, and view the translations of the entire conversation on both the sides. The Translate app has been implemented system-wide, allowing you to easily select text from an email, or even from a photo and translate it in real-time.

Swift Playgrounds for coding

A gamechanger in terms of mobile app development, one the most significant announcements at the WWDC 2021 was the updated release of Swift Playgrounds. The virtual app development environment will now allow you to develop, and even publish apps directly for the iPhone or iPad, and the code written in Swift code will be reflected within the app in real time for a live preview.

Multitasking it better

Apple has big changes in store when it comes to multitasking on the iPad, made more powerful and easier to use with a dedicated control tab. At the top of each app you open, there is a three-dot menu which allows you to launch the window in Slide Over or Split View menu. The Split View screen allows you to access the Home Screen immediately, so you can pick any other app right away and multitask across both of them. At the bottom, you will also find a shelf that displays windows, and you can easily drag any one of them to the Split View screen to enlarge the app. Keyboard users have been granted a whole new set of shortcut keys to use these multitasking features with ease.

App Library and Widgets

After seeing success on iOS 14 for the iPhone, Apple has ported the App Library over to the iPad with the latest update. The dock acts as your doorway to the entire list of apps, which can be easily sorted and arranged based on how you see fit, so you can leave those days of endless swiping behind you. Coming to the widgets, you can now freely move them around on the Home Screen, just as you could on iOS 14. Keeping the extra screen real estate in mind, there are larger widgets available, with the new additions of Game Center, Contacts, Mail, Find My, and App Store to choose from.

Universal Control across all

If you are entirely immersed into the Apple ecosystem, using the iPad, and the Mac together has just been made easier. The Universal Control feature is designed to save you the back and forth when it comes to using a keyboard or trackpad across devices, by bridging the controls for ease of use. Apart from using the mouse and trackpad between the iPad and Mac, you can also drag and drop files, text, and more between the two devices effortlessly.

FaceTime introduces SharePlay

Now that most of our social and work meetings are happening online, Apple is taking a leap forward with SharePlay to bring a more human element to video calling. A more innovative way to access your media and share it live with ease, you can watch videos together, listen to music and audios, and even share your screen, like you would on a Zoom call. Several more features like different mic modes, portrait mode, and grid view has been added to FaceTime. Apple’s prized video calling feature has now gone cross-platform, allowing you to create links on your iDevice and share them across Android and Windows devices via a web browser.

Additional Tidbits

Apart from the groundbreaking features added to iPadOS 15, there are some fancy bells and whistles added to the Messages app too. A new section called Shared with You has been added to stock apps like Photos, Safari, Apple Music, Apple TV, and several others, displaying the related content, link, and images shared with you in the Messages app.

The Memojis have been updated with more customizations for inclusivity, and a new Notifications look makes the icons larger, along with Notifications Summary to sort things out. The Safari web browser app has been redesigned, keeping the iPad layout in mind, with a compact toolbar, and swipe gestures for easy navigation.

A nifty productivity tool added to the iPadOS 15 update is Focus, which filters out the countless notifications and streamlines them. Based on your selections, the system learns your usage habits and suggests notifications that are contextual and time-bound. A similar machine learning experience has been infused into the Spotlight feature, allowing you to perform actions like finding text within an image, better web search results, and more.

With us approaching the second quarter of 2021, Apple is expected to come up with its latest operating system the iOS 15, and the iPadOS 15 sooner. Talking about the iPad OS, it will be the third iteration of the operating system series for iPad, the successor to the 2020s iPadOS 14.

Considering the name trend, the 2021s version of the iPad operating system is likely to be called iPadOS 15. In general, the Apple operating system comes up with similar feature updates across every device with a few extra tweaks here and there, and with the latest software incoming, many rumors, news, and prediction have already started making their way into the scene.

Having said that, we will have a look at all the wishlist for features that are expected to load up with the latest iPadOS 15.

Devices Compatible

One of the biggest queries that almost every Apple lover has before the launch of a new operating system is its compatibility range, and the iPadOS 15 is no exception. Although the official sources aren’t out yet, from what we can expect, the iPadOS 15 might roll out on the devices that featured its predecessor i.e., iPadOS 14.

With that being said, we have prepared a list below that are expected to feature the latest iPadOS 15, sooner or later:

The 2015 Versions

  • iPad Pro 12.9.

The 2017 Versions

  • iPad.
  • iPad Pro 12.9.
  • iPad Pro 10.5.

The 2018 Version

  • iPad.
  • iPad Pro 11.
  • iPad Pro 12.9.

The 2019 Version

  • iPad Air.
  • iPad Mini.

The 2020 Version

  • iPad Pro 12.9.
  • iPad Pro 11.
  • iPad.

In addition to these, the iPad Air 4 and the iPad 10.2 are also expected to roll out the latest OS post its launch.

Expected Release Date

Before jumping right into the anticipated features, let’s talk a bit about when you can expect to have the in-hand experience of the latest iPadOS 15. Apple tends to host the “Apple World Developers Conference” or WWDC in the mid of every year.

In the year 2020, the conference was carried over from June 22 to June 26 and the 2021 version can also be anticipated in the same time phrase. Apple is thus expected to announce their latest software during this conference and roll out the operating systems to all compatible devices by the month of September-October.

iPadOS 15 Features: What Can Be Expected

Optimized Battery

From the initial to the latest days, the battery optimization of the Apple devices going along with the OS hasn’t been that great. If you are someone who has been using an iPad or has been around the Apple devices, you know how hard it is to balance a heavy task like video editing with that of the device’s battery life.

Let’s be honest, the Apple doesn’t do much about this very segment, which the physical capacity being stagnant for years now. With the latest iPadOS 15 ramping around the corner, we would like to see some justice being done with the battery life. The latest software is likely to feature a more optimized battery this time, especially while performing some heavy tasks.

Refined Widgets

When it was rumored that, Apple was going come up with one of the Android’s biggest features i.e., widgets, and incorporate the same within the iOS, its users worldwide were thrilled and started budding all kinds of expectations. But sadly, it came down with a real disappointment. If you have been using the iPad OS 14 or the iOS 14, you are sure to go hand in hand with me when I say “widgets are surely, nearly awful”.

Especially for the iPad, the widget experience is subpar. Unlike the iOS, the iPadOS is deprived of the feature, that will let you reposition the widgets as per your needs. You are only able to leave the widgets in the sidebar of the first page. Hence, only a few of them are visible to you at a time. iPadOS 15, is thus expected to have a look after this very issue and come up with a more refined widget experience for you.

Improved Visuals for Icons and Control Center

We are all aware of how feature-packed Apple operating systems are, especially to talk about the in-display orientations and control centers are an integral part of it. From having the Wi-Fi enabling button near sight, to having all other important settings within the reach of a click, Control Centers can go a long way to enhance the user experience, but if you are using a large screen iPad, this experience can get a bit hazy.

Especially for the large screen iPads, the Control Center buttons are quite small and feel like lost somewhere in the corner. Being a user, you can just feel what I am intending to say whenever you try to toggle with the volume or the brightness slider, etc.

We will thus like the iPadOS 15 to come with the Control Center size adjustment feature. Otherwise, just like Android does, Apple can also let some of the third-party icon sets go parallel with the official operating system. This can help the icons and Control Center options to provide a seamless experience for the large screen iPad users as well.

Support Multiple User Accounts

Everyone in the family uses the iPad for different reasons, one may use it for streaming nothing but Netflix, while the other might use it for doing technical features like editing and typing up emails. Unlike Android, which introduced the Account feature years ago, the sad part is that the Apple iPad doesn’t come with multiple account setup.

It is most probable that a family of three-four or more has a single iPad to serve everyone’s purpose. In that very case, having a different user account is important. With that being said, the latest iPadOS 15 is expected to come with a multiple-user account feature. There are rumors that Apple is exploring the multiple account setup which is a positive notion towards the availability of this feature. This will help everyone have their account, files, and emails, etc. to have access to.

Make Some iOS Exclusive Apps Available for the iPad Platform

Several apps are exclusive to iOS (iPhone only) which is not that good for user experience for iPad users. For instance, suppose own an iPad, and decide to buy an Apple watch for yourself. As the Apple watch is connected and oriented to the iOS, you can’t have one until you have an iPhone. That is not helping the user experience at all.

There are several such apps whose accessibility is ruining the experience of Apple users worldwide. For that very reason, with the latest iPadOS 15 in sight, it is expected that Apple will make sure, at least some of the appss that have iOS access only, to bring support for the larger screen layout of the iPad and iPad Pro.

Other Features That Apple Might Consider

Open to Screen Sharing

Having an option to mirror the iPad’s display into a larger screen can always be convenient for office presentations, playing games, and watching movies. iPadOS 15 is rumored to come with a better screen sharing feature, considering how important the work from home scenario has been since the pandemic broke out.

Facetime Sharing with a Presentation Mode

Facetime sharing with an in-built presentation mode is one of the highly assumed features that is set to be a part of iOS 15 and having the same in the iPadOS version can always come in handy.  One of the features that stood out in 2020 as per the professional perspective is everyone becoming adapted to the video conferencing scene.

While various other platforms like Skype and Zoom played the winner in 2020, Apple’s Facetime missed out by quite a margin in this respect. Incorporating a presentation mode with Apple’s Face time can thus go a long way for you to get the professional tasks done in no time.

External Drive Accessibility

Plugging an external drive and accessing the file is always handy but when we talk about the basic tools that help to do that are missing on iPadOS 14. The latest iPadOS 15 is thus expected to feature additional tools and that can aid in managing external drives in your iPads with convenience. This feature to manage external storage natively on iPadOS15 can be especially handy on the latest generation of iPad and iPad Pro, which feature the USB-C port.

Lock Screen Widgets

iPadOS 15 is expected to feature widgets in the lock screen to enhance the overall user accessibility. For some set of users, having a widget within the lock screen is more important than having those within the home screen. If you are someone with similar taste, well, iPadOS 15 might just be the update that finally makes widgets useful and productive for you.

Final Words

Although the latest operating system from Apple is yet to make an appearance, it is expected to counter the negatives that iPad OS 14 could not resolve. From poor battery life to murky widget encounters, iPad OS 14 hindered the seamless Apple experience to quite an extent.

The successor iPadOS 15 is thus anticipated to come with positive and user-friendly features that can at least hold up users in the long run. Again, these are just what we can expect from a user perspective. The final output is up to the developers and their commitment to meeting the needs of Apple users worldwide.
