The new iPad Pro 2021 is here, two major changes to the new iPad Pro are the breakthrough M1 chip and miniLED screen, both of which are exciting new additions to the device.
M1 Chip:
The flagship feature of this release is using Apple’s M1 chip. The same chip that is in the blazing fast MacBook Air and MacBook Pro (and newly announced iMacs) is now in the iPad Pro.

Apple claims this will deliver “a big jump in performance” over the original iPad Pro. The graphics performance is over 1,500 times better.
“With M1’s huge jump in performance, a groundbreaking extreme dynamic range experience on the 12.9-inch Liquid Retina XDR display, up to 2TB of high-speed storage, Thunderbolt expansion, a four-speaker audio system, pro cameras with LiDAR Scanner, blazing-fast 5G connectivity, an amazing video-calling experience with Center Stage — combined with the advanced features of iPadOS and a powerful pro app ecosystem all in a device users can hold in one hand — there’s nothing else like iPad Pro.”
The chip brings a number of new features, including a “next-generation 16-core Apple Neural engine” and an advanced image signal processor. Apple also says you can expect up to 10 hours of battery life from Wi-Fi models and nine hours from Wi-Fi + Cellular models.
Mini-LED:
The other major improvement for the 2021 iPad Pro models is a Liquid Retina XDR mini-LED display. With up to 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness, up to 1,600 nits of peak brightness, and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, which results in a display never before seen in iPads.
The new screen boasts a 2732-by-2048 resolution at 264 ppi with a max brightness of 600 nits (typical), allowing the screen to more precisely adjust brightness wherever needed.
“The result is a stunning visual experience that reflects what can be seen in the real world by capturing the brightest highlights and the most subtle details in even the darkest images,” Apple said.
“Now creative professionals, including photographers, videographers, and filmmakers, can view and edit true-to-life HDR content on a large display they can take anywhere.”
The Liquid Retina XDR display is only available in the 12.9-inch version of the iPad Pro (2021).
